Dust Advisory…Again

Thursday, April 4, 2013 @ 10:47 AM

Prtince George,B.C.- The City of Prince George is, once again, under a dust advisory.

The Ministry of the Environment says  the   levels of coarse particulate are to blame. Road dust in the  bowl area of the City the cause.

The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles (PM10) is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 62 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 34 µg/m3 at College Heights and 49 µg/m3 at BCR at 8 this morning.

The provincial air quality objective for fine particles (PM2.5) is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 9 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and 7 µg/m3 at College Heights at 8 am today.

Ministry Meteorologist Dennis Fudge says light winds at night and dry conditions over the past several days contributed to dust accumulating in the air shed. Levels have improved in the afternoon over the past two days, but high levels redeveloped overnight possibly due to street sweeping. Lighter winds are forecast this afternoon compared to the past two days so the particulate levels may remain high for most of the day.

Air quality is expected to be better at higher elevations. Precipitation is forecast to develop over the area this evening which will help in reducing particulate levels.

This Dust Advisory is expected to be in effect until tomorrow morning, with an update to be provided this afternoon at 4:30 pm.

The advisory means that as of midnight tonight,  Prince George will provide free transit rides  through to  midnght  on the  day the  advisory comes to an end.

The longer the City takes to remove the winter grit from the streets and the more often we have low wind conditions, the more frequent the advisories will be.

We have not control of the weather. We do have control over street and parking lot sweeping sweeping frequency.

So, who to blame. Such a difficult choice.

Last time there was an advisory the city halted all sweeping even after saying that with pre wetting it adds little dust to the airshed. ??? The cleaner roads they leave behind should offset any dust they do put in the air and we would now be days ahead in getting all the streets clean.

Private parking lots are another story.

We cover the City with a few inches of dirt every winter. What do we expect?

Dont worry it will snow tonight and the sanders will be out ;)

Perhaps it is a money saving measure brought forward in the core review, have all the residents who work in the bowl remove this silica dust to outlying areas in their lungs.

“We cover the City with a few inches of dirt every winter. What do we expect?”

1. That the wind will take care of it?

2. That we have to take care of it?

3. That we only deposit washed fines thus not adding to the PM10 that is put into the air through other carrying agents.

It is the fault of city council, it is their city.

It is the fault of the liberals, it is their term in office.

It is the fault of federal conservatives, it is their term in office.

It must be the NDP, they caused stuf to happen 15 years ago.

It must be the Unions, it is their members doing the work.

I know a funny little man,
As quiet as a mouse,
Who does the mischief that is done
In everybody’s house!
There’s no one ever sees his face,
And yet we all agree
That every plate we break was cracked
By Mr. Nobody.

’Tis he who always tears out books,
Who leaves the door ajar,
He pulls the buttons from our shirts,
And scatters pins afar;
That squeaking door will always squeak,
For prithee, don’t you see,
We leave the oiling to be done
By Mr. Nobody.

The finger marks upon the door
By none of us are made;
We never leave the blinds unclosed,
To let the curtains fade.
The ink we never spill; the boots
That lying round you see
Are not our boots,—they all belong
To Mr. Nobody.

I think the City should also issue a dog crap advisory. Pretty gross out there.

We now know how dangerous dust and particulate can be to our lungs and health. We are talking asthma, emphysema, breathing issues, bronchitis, and eventual lung cancer.

We need to stand up and pressure City Council to move MUCH faster on this issue ~ both parking lots and the streets.

It is an issue for all of us ~ you should not be breathing this dust for days on end like we do.

It makes great nose boogers :)

Come out at 3am and see who is to blame. The city has 2 water trucks there is no dust while their sweepers are working and there is 3 out working on all shifts. The private contracts are in the parking lots with no water because they are to cheap to pay for a water truck. You can’t see the machines for the dust. No one does anything about that, because we wouldn’t want to make the private guy mad. They make the world go around with all their wonderful high paying jobs, right!

I’m told the city is not allowed to sweep streets during “air advisories”. Catch-22.

Great, time for my 7 month old son to begin his 2 puffers again. Thanks p.g. Councilours for your stupidity and why do I live in this hell hole.

I drove along Tyner this afternoon, following a pickup which was being driven a good half of the way from UNBC to Domano with his right wheels on the shoulder, which is, of course, the only part of the road which has so-called sand on it. The dust rose up to the top of his tailgate height on occasion.

When I left the CH shopping centre later on, I could smell the particles in the air. Before I left to go there, I could see the dust covering the top of the car. Ran my finger across it to make sure I was seeing right.

They did part of Ospika, likely last night. The bike lane still had quite a layer of fines on it. I suspect that will be around for some time.

30 to 40 years ago they used drive around with a water truck during the summer to get rid of those fines. I find many standards have diminished considerably.

Okay….I give up. Why are local politicians at fault for the dusty conditions ? I’ve heard Shari has a magic wand but…….

I witness cars and trucks doing this everywhere. I have no idea why people insist on driving on the dust strip. I can’t figure out whether they’re oblivious or stupid.
