CNC Research Looks to Use Woodstoves to Extend Growing Season

Thursday, April 11, 2013 @ 3:53 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Research being done at CNC could result in good news for greenhouse operators.

The College’s Applied Research and Innovation Department has received a $20 thousand dollar grant to determine the potential for converting heat from woodstoves, into energy. “Heat generated by commonly used woodstoves in greenhouses is used to further generate electricity which will be used to power LED lighting,” said Lynn Florey, project planner at CNC’s Applied Research and Innovation department.   The LED lighting will add several hours of light before sunrise and after sunset to increase the growing season.

The research will examine the input and output of energy and determine if the use of different fuel sources impact those levels. CNC will also complete a cost-benefit analysis of the project so growers can see if this kind of technology is a benefit to their operations.

“This is not brand new technology, but using it in greenhouses applications is novel,” explained Hardy Griesbauer, director for CNC’s Applied Research and Innovation department. “It’s free energy, other than the initial costs of buying the supplies and could add two months to the beginning and end of the regular growing season.”

The project will begin in May.

Free Energy ??? please explain!!

Say what. Art Knapps used to burn wood and I am sure the other green houses did also. Amazing but I guess its all about the grants and such. Hey here is a novel idea why ask why they no longer burn wood considering it is free.

Free, how is it free, yes please explain.

How do the woodstove police feel about this?
