Pruning Time Not Just for Gardeners

Prince George, B.C. – It’s tree pruning time and it’s not just to ensure the trees in your yard are healthy. Now is the time of year when BC Hydro is out, cutting back limbs from power lines.
More than half of all power outages in B.C. are caused by trees. So, now, and through the spring and summer, crews will be pruning and removing trees near power lines in an effort to prevent power outages.
BC Hydro has 74 thousand kilometers of overhead power lines, and spends more than $50 million each year to manage the vegetation around those lines.
B.C. Hydro’s manager of Vegetation and Access, Chris Smith, says there are a number of things they consider when looking at trees that are close to power lines “Broken branches, severe leans, dead trees, co-dominant stems, ground cracks or heaves, decay or cavities. We love trees as much as our customers do and don’t want to remove them unless they pose a danger to our line.”
If you need more information, you are encouraged to contact the B.C. Hydro office and ask to speak with a vegetation coordinator.
