Campaign Officially Underway, One Candidate Resigns
Tuesday, April 16, 2013 @ 11:48 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The days of unofficial campaigning are switching to a higher gear, as the Provincial Election campaign is officially underway in B.C.. Premier Christy Clark met with the Lieutenant Governor this morning who has issued the writs of election.
The campaign is less than two hours old, and has already claimed its first casualty. NDP leader Adrian Dix has issued the following statement:
"Earlier today, I was made aware of unacceptable comments made by Kelowna-Mission NDP candidate Dayleen van Ryswyk. I have accepted Ms. Van Ryswyk’s resignation. A new BC NDP candidate will be announced shortly."
The comments attributed to VanRyswyk include negative remarks about First Nations and French Canada.
The NDP have until April 26th to name a new candidate.
In making the official "dropping of the writ" announcement to members of the media in Victoria, Christy Clark seized the opportunity to put in a plug for the Liberal campaign “British Columbia is at a crossroads with two very different choices in front of us in this most important election in modern history” said Clark as she lead into the highlights of the Liberal platform that had been released yesterday.
Here at home, the election signs are being put in place, and the local New Democrats are declaring "28 days to change".
The most recent polls show the NDP still have a stong lead against Clark and the Liberal team, with 17 points between them.
The B.C. Conservatives are running 46 candidates in 85 ridings while the Green Party is running 50.

I love it. Another stupid politician who denies herself a feeding at the taxpayers trough. Acting all big and tough and then oops!! Did I say that? Perfect, they’re all lying pigs.
Who cares? Good riddance. Her views definitely don’t fall in line with the NDP. She’s a fool. Sounds more like a conservative to me.
And that in a nutshell, is why we have government policies that sometimes make you scratch your head. Sometimes people like this actually get elected and have influence.
all you critics take note, Somebody has to do it. We only call them politicians but they do the best job they can while tied to party line whether they like it or not. They don’t have politicians in North Korea and neither do they have critics. Amen
“Somebody has to do it”
Do what? Be an elected bigot?
Obviously Dix does not think that will get votes. If it did, he would have put her close to him.
Gus, Opinion 250 does not mean you have to make 250 comments on each news report.
“I think she might fit in better with the BC Conservatives”
Nah, she’s not an old white guy ;)
It is a good thing to get it out of the way early,as the NDP have done. They have the ninties hanging over their heads, they don’t need anymore baggage especially as they get closer to election day.On the upside “oil”,gus only has to post 248 more times about this story.
I guess it’s okay to call someone a dangerous drug addict, even one that has been clean for sixteen years such as Pat Bell did.It is demeaning to every addict out there who has recovered or is trying to recover. It must be pretty special to be a BC Liberal and get away with that kind of thing with your boss and the people of BC!
NDP in Manitoba just raised PST to 8%. What’s interesting is they can’t do that without a referendum, so they’re changing the law so that they don’t need a referendum because they have to do it in a hurry. Didn’t the Liberals sort of do the same thing with HST. We said we wouldn’t do it, but had to do it, because Ontario did it, and we have to stay competitive. Not sure how I’m going to vote yet, but the distinctions between parties are getting blurred for me.
From CBC
Struthers said he will change the Balanced Budget Legislation that would require the NDP government to hold a referendum before increasing the PST. He added the province needed to move quickly to improve flood prevention infrastructure.
âPart of moving quickly means we have to get started right away,â he said. âBudget 2013 means we can start right away.â
The NDP in Manitoba is also dipping into the Rainy Day Fund and it has (just like it did in B.C.) separated the provincial debt into two debts: General debt and debt incurred by crown corporations. Definitely a trick to make it look as if the debt the taxpayers are responsible for is a lot smaller than it is in reality, because at the end of the day it’s all the same thing because ordinary people ALWAYS have to bail out government corporations when they need to be bailed out.
The B.C. Fast Ferry Debt for instance was written off by adding it to general debt, i.e. we will be paying for it.
Everyone has candidates that screwup not news, hell even Ministers and MLA’S step into it.The election is on so now is the time to vent at the ballot box and earn the right to bitch.
Gus, please keep your comments coming, always a chuckle and a lot of good comments.
Thanks for the link to that story, interesting read.
Used to watch those fast ferries wake, woke up a few islanders, they were mad as hell at Clark, and sold for a song. Quite a legacy the NDP left the province. Now, if they’d only LEAVE….
So much for opinion on opinion250
âBritish Columbia is at a crossroads”
Really? How on earth did British Columbia come to be at a crossroads? Oh right, 12 years of Liberal “leadership.”
This woman couldn’t be any more ridiculous if she was a court jester pretending to be the CEO of a fortune 500 company. She is a complete buffoon and liability to her party, not that any leader could save them from what’s coming, but really, they couldn’t do better than that? Dumb as a post and hopelessly unaware of her own ineptitude.
Bill Bennett has said some pretty stupid things over the years; but to the Liberals rein him in? Nope! The last dumb thing he did was call the opposition “turds”. So I guess that makes him “King S**t of Turd Island”!
Thanks Grizzly1. I think that is the strength of a site like this.
In my view, the original reports by the opinion250 owners and staff seed the discussion. Posters will bring forward not only opinions, but also additional information. In my view, both have a place on here. Often, in good âdiscussionâ, opinions are backed up by additional information and thus present informed opinions.
I like to associate blogs with real time, face to face get together with friends. The social chat that happens goes back and forth like a game of tennis ⦠keep the ball in play â¦.the objective is not to drop the ball but to keep the event interesting and moving. As people jump in, new avenues open up and new information is added. It is dynamic and, depending on the topics the people participating the most will change. Some have limited interest; others have larger range of interests and will participate more than others.
The human factor at play. :-)
Good answer Gus. You seem to always have practical comments.
Too bad someone wouldn’t accept Dix’s resignation. The fact he is even leader of the NDP after the document scandal is crooked enough for me not to vote for these clowns.
The Liberal years are fluff compared to the NDP reign of scandals.
Go ahead and vote for Shirley Bond, “the mother of all scandals.” She should have resigned 250 times for all the screw ups while in office.
BTW why is it opinion “250”? 250 gossipers ;-)
In case you have not been reading.. It is known as 250news, and has been for more than a half year.
News, sports, weather are our mainstays.. Opinion is secondary although there may be many you who do not feel that way.
Didn’t notice the name change! But like the PGX you can change the name but it is still the PGX.
Name one thing Shirley did that is equal to “the document scandal” univ!
“Opinion is secondary”??
How about a little experiment Ben, remove the comment section completely for a week or two and see what happens to the amount of traffic to the site. Down 50% ? 60% ? 75% ?
“BTW why is it opinion “250”?” .. I would assume the 250 stands for the area code here.
lonesome: “How about a little experiment Ben, remove the comment section completely for a week or two and see what happens to the amount of traffic to the site. Down 50% ? 60% ? 75% ?”
I think Mr. Meisner is very aware that comments are a ‘necessary evil’ and drive a lot of traffic to this site, maybe even the majority of it.
Hate to break it to you folks, the stories posted about the news, weather and to a lesser degree sports, are what drive the traffic to our site.” Friday Free for All” is an exception.
It would be silly to think without comments there would be no drop in our audience but not the kind of percentages you suggest.
250 news did not become the most read news source in central and northern BC because people are able to make comments.
NoWay
Just google” Shirley Bond scandal” and you will be provided with numerous links to some scandals, as I’m sure would apply to most politicians. It’s up to you to decide which scandals are more damaging to taxpayers and to the province. Vote accordingly.
The ability to make comments is in my opinion much more of a bonus than some kind of evil. Often comments expand on the stories by giving additional grass roots information and insights. Even city councillors have made comments…proving that the readership is more inclusive than one may assume. In fact, the additional information is often something that some others would rather keep under wraps. Therefore, thanks for the comments feature!
The actual number of people who read the stories on the site may not drop by that much but I maintain the number of “clicks” would drop by at least 75%. People revisit a particular story only to read the comments and in some cases add a new one.
I think your ad revenue is based on the amount of clicks….hate to break it to you but comments keep the boat afloat.
What did I miss…are we not allowed to give opinions anymore? Will I have to change my handle?
where did it say in my item that we were no longer allowing comments.
If by the way we didn’t allow comments changing your handle would be of little use.
This is always a problem , people read into a story what they think was said, rather than what actually was said.
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” or something like that. I am not an ndp or liberal party supporter, but really, this Van Ryswyk character made those online ‘comments’ eight years ago, what is she like today? Perhaps she has matured over the years and no longer spouts stupid or rascist opinions, who knows? Dix made the P.C. decision to “request her resignation” to save face in light of the upcoming election, that’s all.
metalman.
funny thing, folks in kelowna didn’t think her, van ryswyk, worthy of a city council seat, getting less than 1% of votes, but today in an online poll, now that her racist war mongering views have been publicized, about 75% of participants would have her elected to provincial legislature as an independent.
racism against aboriginals is quite rampant in the okanagan for sure.
I think Van ryswyk should of asked for Dix’s resignation at the same time for what he did many years ago to save face in light of the upcoming election. Or does everyone believe that he has changed?
I for one don’t think he has changed his ways or thinking at all!!
Once a Dix always a Adrian Dix!
Thanks BUT for your answer.
What Dix did was a show of decisive leadership. It is the quality that Christy dark failed to show from day one when she became the leader/premier and she allowed those like Bond to effectively corrupt the whole institutions of the government to the extent that even other BC senior Ministers go public about it or quit. Why should Shirley Bond be the BC justice minister when she has been openly accused of corruption?
This is the essence of Christy dark and her team. A dark image that needs to be changed.
