CNC Issues 4 Layoff Notices as Part of Budget Balancing

Friday, April 26, 2013 @ 3:29 PM
Prince George, B.C.- Four CNC instructors have been given layoff notices as the College of New Caledonia worked to develop a balanced budget.

CNC President John Bowman says three of the notices could be rescinded before they come into effect at the end of July.  “The positions were dependent upon ‘non-core’ funding, which did not come through this year, so we didn’t really have a choice”  says Bowman.
The College achieved a balanced budget by increasing tuition by 2%, discontinuing low enrolment courses, reducing expenses, reallocating unused budgets to areas in need, a hiring freeze, reducing expenses for equipment, and reorganizing some support areas.

The Provincial funding for the 2013/13 year is $28.9 million, a decrease of nearly $80 thousand dollars.  The budget for the entire college is just over $56.7 million dollars.

The other news from the College’s Board of Governor’s meeting today saw the Chair of CNC’s Board of Governors and two vice-chairs re-acclaimed.

Robert (Bob) Murray was re-acclaimed as chair for the third straight year. Murray, who was first elected as board chair in September, 2011, is in his sixth and final year on the board. Murray has also served a two-year term as vice-chair for regional campuses.
Keith Playfair was once again re-acclaimed as vice-chair for regional campuses. Linda Smerychynski was also re-acclaimed vice-chair for Prince George.

Budget balancing? Layoffs? What a novel idea! Instead of more debt. Sure hope it is catching in Victoria just like the bird flu in the Orient.

A decrease of $80,000 in provincial funding….are you saying that the BC Liberals are showing their true colours on how they support post secondary education??

Shame, shame, shame…a trades training college and your cutting their funding when everyone knows there is an acute shortage of trained workers…….

Wow! I bet you try to “balance your budget”. But that’s different, I guess.

We don’t know if the reduction in funding is due to special funding for a project which is completed now and no longer needed or if certain courses have been dropped. I expect the government to be on top of that and not send money which is no longer needed.

Why be ashamed?

So where is all this money for training we keep hearing about, oh right soaked up in administration.

Four staff laid off, but administrators safe even getting re-acclaimed whatever that means. Did the party come out of the budget?

What was the criteria for selecting the instructors for layoff? The type of contract? Less seniority?

In the case of UNBC, the biggest minority in UNBC affected by the last layoffs were faculty members from Asia. A funding member of Prince George mosque was let go and a younger Canadian faculty member, in his department who was recently hired was spared. Case of racism?

These kinds of discriminatory treatments of international faculty members (based on their place of birth or religion) only damages any prospects of hiring international students, which is now the only hope for saving the university from closure.

I am ashamed!
I am ashamed of the Liberals running huge debts.
I am ashamed of the Cristy Clark Liberals and their outright lies!
I am ashamed of the Liberals poor record of dealing with child poverty!
I am ashamed of the Liberals and all their scandals!
What I am most ashamed of is that there are still people out there that that think the Fiberals are worthy of screwing the taxpayers even more!

I am ashamed that Dix is the leader of the NDP. Doesn’t that party have any morals? Couldn’t they find anyone else? What were they thinking! How many premiers did they go through because of their scandals?

I heard the layoffs at CNC were welding instructors. Imagine that, 50 – 60 students waiting for an upgrade course! Sorry program is canceled.

Still not voting orange!!!!

I’m ashamed that having been screwed royally by two previous NDP governments, that this province actually may elect them again….

I” ashamed that we had an NDP Premier that was involved in the Bingogate fraud that appeared to ripped off designated charities so the profits could be secretly donated to the NDP party.

I’m ashamed that a Glen Clark former NDP Premier, used his office to get free construction favours for his personal property.

I’m ashamed that anyone in the NDP party thought that Ujal Dosange had any idea whatsoever how to run a province….and of course history proves he didn’t.

I’m ashamed that the NDP party federally took about $400 thousand a couple years ago from their in ILLEGAL political contributions….knowing full well that the money WAS illegal.

I’m ashamed that the NDP (even though caught redhanded with the illegal union donations, have not even had the self respect to admit it and apologize.

I think thats enough for now (but only a small sampling of a list that could go on forever)

That should read…..

“I’m ashamed that the NDP party federally (same party Provincially)a couple years ago, took about $400 from their big union bosses in ILLEGAL political donations….knowing full well that the money WAS illegal.

Hmmmmm…that was actually WORTH repeating.

Wiktionary definition of ashamed:

1.Feeling shame or guilt.

Nobody should feel ashamed (having a feeling of shame or guilt) except the crooked shyster politicians who keep doing these things.

Cheers!

Industry needs all the Trade Workers, how about stepping up to the Plate and do your own Training. I know a few Companies like Hydro and Telus spending a Bundle on in House Training, why is it allways the Taxpayer to come up with Funding .
WE have 1 Industry , the “Education One ” ,we take all your Money to teach you some Skills. Next will be , you have to go to UNBC to be a Carpenter and bring all your Money to pay for it! Are we ever screwed up.

So who on here that is commenting about the cutbacks has seen the detailed budget and understands why those cutbacks have been made.

AND … who on here has ever worked in a post secondry education system and understands where the funds come from, because they do not all come from the same source. In fact, some actually come from industry, allbeit very little.

AND … if they were to increase the money coming from the industry, you will likely find that they too get subsidies for training on occasion …..

RISK AVOIDANCE ….. that is what I call it. Since industry is no longer willing to support their staff with lifetime positions, it is everyone for themselves. So, they let the government train as much as possible.

LEGISLATION to force industry to pay for the training of their workers. There are countries that do that.

ELECTION ISSUE – I do not see this on anyone’s election platform. All I hear is jobs, jobs, jobs ….. but how does one get those bloody jobs?????? No one tells me.

The current president Bowman leaves by 31 July this year and his successor may rescind his decision to layoff 4 faculty members considering that the newly elected BC government can come up with few thousands Dollars for that or the new president can come up with an early retirement buyout package instead.

This problem of forced layoffs is a self made problem and they wouldn’t have existed if the age of 65 for retirement has not been eliminated (e.g. in UNBC). The salary of each senior professor at the age of 65 is 1.5 to 2 times of a junior faculty member at age of 40 and the productivity is comparable if not less.

Do the “arithmetic” having buyout packages for early retirement is better or having forced layoff policies implemented badly by racist/discriminatory decisions?

Can someone inform “what is NDP’s degree of tolerance for racist and discriminatory policies in public institutions?”

BC Liberal party, despite its rhetoric, badly failed in this regard. Just look at the increasing no of cases reported in the news and blogs over the past few years, in UNBC and PG.

Nobody is entitled to a guaranteed job for life.

It is shameful that discriminatory practices in the university have been allowed to continue and our MLAs like Shirley Bond have done nothing to stop it in Prince George.

It is shameful that today we are reminded of discrimination by the Egyptian delegation in UN after an Egyptian-Canadian is discriminated in UNBC …

It is shameful that we are reminded of discrimination by another middle-east country whose citizen was discriminated in UNBC of “discriminatory law and regulation against indigenous people and minority groups including Muslim, Arab and African communities.” …

It is shameful that our institution’s heads have hidden their heads in the snow and let these local issues turn into international condemnations and UN fact finding inquiries ….

Yes, It is shameful for Canada to be told by “the Chinese delegation” in UN of “widespread racial discrimination in Canada.” …

They lie and tell us they are putting more money into post secondary education….in Kelowna maybe but not up north where collect the bulk of the taxes….shame shame shame

No shame on me today. I wore a favourite shirt Made in Pakistan.
