Quinn Street Transfer Station Now Just for Recyclables

Thursday, May 2, 2013 @ 3:50 AM

Prince George, B.C. – It’s official, the Regioal District of Fraser Fort George  is now  in charge of the Vanway Transfer Station and the Quinn Street Recycle Depot.

As of the  1st of May,  the Regioinal District is now in charge of the Quinn Street  site  which has not been accepting solid waste for a month now.  Instead it has  been  changed  into a recycling depot.  The  Quinn Street site will accept the following:
•             Mixed paper
•             Newspaper
•             Milk jugs
•             Food cans
•             Yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, etc.)
•             Used oil
•             Antifreeze
•             Metal (old bike frames, non-refrigerating appliances, etc)

It won’t cost anything to drop off  recyclables at the Quinn Street site.

The Vanway Transfer Station now offers opportunities for recycling, composting of yard and garden waste, and household garbage disposal by way of the on-site transfer station.  While  it won’t cost you  anything to drop off recyclables at the Vanway site,  City of Prince George residents who are  planning to  drop  off  extra houselhold waste will have to  pay $6 dollars.

Residents from the West Lake, Beaverley and Mud River areas have a Pass Card that allows for 50 visits to the transfer station for the purpose of disposing of household garbage.

Both the Quinn Street Recycle Depot and the Vanway Transfer Station are now open summer hours Monday – Saturday: 7:00 am. – 7:00 p.m, Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.  Statutory holiday hours are 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Quinn street was a great place to take garbage… sorry to see it close.

I wonder what the status is now of the Sani Dump at that location ?? I hope the City does not close that too.

When we were thru there last week, we tried to park at the first avenue tourist office… could not get anywhere close to it with all the local vehicles parked in the “reserved for tourists only” spots. Wondered where all the tourists where from the vehicles parked with local company names on them. The tourist office was empty except for the helpful lady on duty.

Somebody needs to review chapter one of the Superhost handbook… it talks about seeing your location thru the eyes of a visitor.

Coming to a back alley near you…..more garbage. Take the convenience away from people and they will conveniently dump it somewhere else.

Just have Wallmart had out visitor pamphlets. That should cover it!

I see there is a new dump opened up behind the northscale. They take everthing there.

Closing the Quinn St station to garbage was a bad decision. Apparently this decision will save the City $250,000.00 per year. Somehow I kind of doubt it. Even if it saves the City some money, it will cost taxpayers more in gas, etc to go to Vanway, or Foohills.

The real problem here is the fact that we paid huge dollars for this site to be located on Quinn St., and now it wont be used. This is a real waste of tax dollars, and someone should be responsible for the decision to build this and locate it on Quinn in the first place, then raise the rates so high people did not use it.

In fact they should have reduced the rate to $2 or $3.00 and kept the site open. If they lost money on the site so what. Since when do you expect to make money on Municipal Garbage disposal??

The people who make these decisions should be looking for employment elsewhere, because it costs us to much to have them on the City payroll.

These would be the same people who abandoned all the buildings on the East end of 3rd Avenue and built themselves new digs at 18th and Ospika.

Perhaps they closed the Quinn St., facility because the garbage was to close to their new offices,.

I bet the City will end up building a garage/shop in that location to house all of the equipment that is currently located at the 4th Ave. yards.

With other peoples money there is no end of problems city hall can dream up.

I see a rash of garbage dumps happening on the front lawn of city hall!
