Prince George, B.C. – A ground search for a woman, who slipped and fell into the Willow River, east of Prince George,  will not resume until the water levels recede.

RCMP say the 68 year old had slipped and fallen into the fast moving river yesterday while walking her dog in the area where the river crosses under Highway 16.

An aerial search of the length of the river from the bridge to the Fraser River, failed to turn up an sign of the woman.

Although Swift Water trained Search & Rescue personnel were on scene, they were not able to enter the river as the water was too dangerous.   They did however travel the banks of the river in the immediate area of the incident, but found no sign of the missing woman.

The RCMP’s Air Services Section will continue to search the river at various times throughout the next week. RCMP say a ground and water search may continue when the river declines and is deemed safer.

As water levels rise the banks of rivers  become unstable. The Prince George Search & Rescue Society and the Prince George RCMP are urging those persons in close proximity to rivers, to take extra caution and remain at a safe distance.

My heart goes out to the family and friends during these sad times. The waiting is the worst. And also to the PGSAR volunteers and the first responders involved.

It was a tragedy on this same river in 1974 that led to the creation of the PGSAR group. However the river has continued to take lives since. Let us be careful all.
