P.G. Unemployment Rate Down from Last Year

Friday, May 10, 2013 @ 9:41 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The  unemployment rate in Prince George was 4.6% last month, down from the 7.2% recorded in the same month a year ago.

Statistics Canada’s Vince Ferrao says the change did not come as a result of increased employment, rather, it is a result of a decrease in the labour force.

For the Cariboo region, the scenario was much the same, the unemployment rate was 5.6%, compared to 7.7% in April of 2012. Once again, the decrease credited to a drop in the labour force.

Provincially, the rate inched up to 6.4%, up from 6.3% recorded in April of 2012.

Nationally, the rate  was 7.2%.

“Overall, B.C. gained 9,500 jobs in April, and Statistics Canada says the gains were due to a big surge in the public sector, where almost 20,000 jobs were added.”

“B.C. actually lost 10,800 private sector jobs in April, bringing the total number of jobs lost in that sector to more than 45,000 since the B.C. government announced its jobs plan in September, 2011.

At the time, Premier Christy Clark highlighted the importance of a thriving private sector.”

9,500 in April? Must be for all the polling booths; which will all dry up after the election. Like all the other Fiberal promises.

20,000 public sector?
Hired by whom?
The small government federal conservatives, or the fiscally prudent provincial Liberals?
Our tax dollars at work.
