Prince George, B.C. – The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Prince George has hit a fundraising milestone, collecting a record $500,000.

The Society’s Team Lead, Community Giving Helen Owen says it is a record here. She says the half-million-dollar mark was reached in Prince George once before, but this is the first time that amount has been reached on event day itself. “We are very lucky”, says Owen. “We have phenomenal support from the community in Prince George. The registered participants, sponsors and all the supporters they are so amazingly generous and supportive, I’m totally overwhelmed. A great community event. People supported each other, total strangers supporting each other, celebrating together as well as sharing some sad moments. But it was just a wonderful community event.” Helen Owen adds that there is still money coming in, so the total amount raised will be going up.

It was anything but nice out earlier Sunday morning as participants continued their march toward beating cancer. With the 24-hour event due to wrap up at 10 a.m. the sky darkened and a downpour soaked the track at Masich Place Stadium and participants alike. However, that was not about to dampen the spirits of the men, women and children who dedicated there time to raise funds for the battle against the disease. They simply threw on some warmer clothing and continued their walk.

And then, just as suddenly as they had moved in, the dark clouds headed toward the Alberta border and were replaced by bright, warm sunshine. A fitting way to bring this 21st relay in Prince George to a close.
