Prince George, B.C. – British Columbia’s 40th General Election is now in the books with the Liberals returned for another four-year term.
As you will now be aware, Liberal incumbent Shirley Bond retained her seat in Prince George-Valemount and Mike Morris won in his first foray into provincial politics in Pat Bell’s former riding of Prince George-Mackenzie. The two New Democrats who challenged them for those seats were also making their inaugural attempts at a seat in the legislature.
Sherry Ogasawara, who took on Bond, says she respects the voters’ decision but adds the loss won’t stop either her or Deepak. “We’re eager to go on and so we’re going to continue the fight and keep working on the things that we believe in. I think our approach was very clear, it was practical, it was fiscally responsible.” So what did Ogasawara think of her first campaign experience? “Well I knew going into this that it would all be positive, no matter the outcome, because I don’t think there’s a way that you could not have benefited through this experience and those are the things that I’m going to take away from this. You just become a different person. I feel I’ve become a better person.” Asked whether she will run in the next election, Ogasawara says emphatically “Yes, I already had decided that whatever the outcome, I’m ready to continue working. We’ve learned from the mistakes that we’ve made, I don’t think at first blush there were a lot of them, but there are issues that need to be addressed so those are the things that I’m going to continue to fight for in whatever capacity. And when the next opportunity comes around I’m sure that I’ll be seeking the nomination.”
Bobby Deepak says running in the election was an invaluable experience. “We’ve met a lot of people, we’ve worked hard, we had a lot of supporters that worked hard and I’m proud of our campaign.” He says people he met on the doorstep talked about several issues. “They talked about the temporary foreign workers, Enbridge, skills training, health care, those were the issues that we were speaking to the public at their doorstep.” Asked about his future plans Deepak says “well I think it’s a bit too early to be thinking about that. I think I’ll think about that and maybe you’ll see me around, maybe you won’t, but that’s something I’ll leave open. But I will continue to be very active here in the north. I have been active and will continue to fight for the issues that are raised in the north and for our benefit here in the north.”

BC Racer….you are simply a…SORE LOSER
WAY TO GO SHIRLEY, MIKE, JOHN & CORALEE
BCRacer,
time to put your tail between your legs and run away.
woke up this morning to find out that there is still hope for our province. The NDP fell off a cliff and will not form government. truly great news.
I am a Liberal supporter, but I don’t think this is the last we will see of Bobby, in political campaigns.
I really like Sherry Ogasawara, Bobby Deepak because they stand for some good issues and rand a good local platform..They boty showed alot of class last night actually going to the lions den and congratulating Bond and Morris.. However the risk of getting Dix was too great and this was the deciding factor.
Their hearts may be in the right place, but they have to learn what it takes to win without a record of applicable success behind them and obviously a local and provincial party machine which will make their work easier.
I would say that for anyone that wants to be there in 2017, they need to start now getting the riding association ready to fight an election.
Where have all the Dippers gone?
Long time passing..
Where have all the Dippers gone?
Since Tuesday night…
Where have all the Dippers gone?
Gone into hiding every one…
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
To the tune of “Where have all the flowers gone”
Of course I had fun with this one
I would like to congradulate Christy Clarke in her victory. I believe she will lead BC into prosperity. She won by a landfall, I wonder who ran the polls? Maybe they did them at Union meetings? You never know.
Yes, BC Racer, I totally agree with you…you make a lot of sense.
I wonder how much it cost the NDP to have those video commercials about the merits of voting for them, and how horrible the liberals have been for us, inserted before EVERY video I clicked on in YouTube, for several days before the election?
Last time I checked, video commercials are a pretty penny these days !!
People just don’t let up on this ay…..nasty comments just keep coming….I cannot believe it!!!!!!!!!!!
nononsense: head over to cbc.ca. They have plenty of nasty, moronic comments being made over there that might be more to your liking.
Gee, I noticed something this morning!! Coming down from the Hart. The Liberals had been out early; taking down the majority of their signs–too bad the others wouldn’t get to it!! Too busy crying in their beer?? At this point in the game, it’s time to clean up the ‘roadside litter’; whatever party!! If you put it up, please, take it back down.
SJM. I was very impressed (on the streets I drove on today) By the removal of all party signs. As we are all are critics, we can say how good and responcible they all are. But we can also say the longer the signs stay there, the less chance they can retrieve them. The more they retrieve the more they can use in the next campaign. So they would use less money on signs an more money on other things. 2 different motives. one or both could be true.
Christy Clark is not the first leader who lost her seat during an election:
“Dave Barrett was personally defeated in the Coquitlam seat he had held since its creation in a 1965 redistribution, losing to Socred challenger George Herman Kerster by only 18 votes. In June 1976, he was returned to the legislature in a by-election in Vancouver East, after sitting NDP MLA Robert A. Williams stepped aside.”
