Hydro To Give Aging Poles A ‘Lift’

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 @ 3:55 AM

Prince George, BC – As part of BC Hydro’s ongoing maintenance program, the utility is advising that many power poles in, and around, the city will be replaced this summer.

More than 20-percent of Hydro’s wooden poles are 40 years or older and reaching ‘end of life’.  Across the province, that amounts to the replacement of approximately 10-thousand poles this year. (250News file photo at right)

Hydro officials say work will begin on digging and setting poles in Prince George, with an eye to finishing up by the end of summer.

Pole replacement typically doesn’t require power to be disconnected, so there is expected to be minimal impact on customers.

Good times for Stella Jones..? Maybe?

BCRacer, I am not sure why you keep posting that the smart meters are not working.

I just logged into “MYHYDRO” and viewed my activity.

I can see daily activities, weekly, monthly, billing period, etc. I can compare it to similar homes nearby ….

It is actually quite neat. It is clearly telling me that the light bulbs I have installed are working as they should and that my neighbours have a long way to go … in fact, they are using electricity at a rate of about 40% higher than I am.

Pretty SMART …. :-)

I do not understand why they are not installing concrete poles when the wooden ones are no longer secure.

Gus: “I do not understand why they are not installing concrete poles”
Probably has something to do with a little thing called ‘huge difference in price’
A certified 30′ power pole costs less than $200.00
Steel reinforced concrete would cost several times more, I suspect.

Ask them.

Well if I was your neighbor Gus you still wouldn’t be able to see my power consumption or how and when my light bulbs are on… still have my old meter… sent them packing when they came by to try and change it. :)

Also I am really disappointed in our local politicians for not standing up for PG. Highway 16 from 97 to Peden hill and all along central street really should have power underground like a modern city and not all strung out like a third world eye sore. IMHO

I agree with hydro going underground over time. There should be a 10 or even 15 year program for that. There woud be fewer power outages during snow and wind storms.

BTW, is anyone else getting Fortis gas meters exchanged? The story appears to be that some meters cut off gas flow or impede gas flow and so they are replacing those metes. I am wondering if that explanation is valid.
