Prince George, B.C. – Two men are being checked out at University Hospital of Northern BC following a single-vehicle rollover accident on North Ospika Boulevard early this evening.

An RCMP spokesman on scene says the two are being looked over as a precautionary measure but does not believe they suffered any serious injuries. He also says the driver of the truck involved is under police escort and will be checked for alcohol involvement.

Eyewitnesses at the scene, in the 700 block North Ospika between Ayr Place and Blair Crescent, say the truck was going very fast when it rounded a curve in the road, went up on two wheels and then travelled out of control until hopping the curb on the opposite side of the road and rolling onto its roof. The passenger was removed from the wreckage and taken to hospital by ambulance. The driver had to be freed from the wreckage by responding firefighters. He had a few scratches on his face but no other visible injuries. He got into a brief altercation with one of several policemen at the scene and shortly afterward was escorted to the hospital.

The wreckage of the older truck and wooden box, packed with shingles and other roofing materials, was scattered over a wide area but all of it was off the road surface. It could not be immediately ascertained what type of truck it was.

People from the neighbourhood who had gathered at the scene say it’s not the first time someone has taken that portion of the road too fast, and it likely won’t be the last. They say it was fortunate nobody was walking along the street at the time of the accident.
Police continue their investigation but say alcohol is believed a factor in the incident.
