Slow Down in School Zones

Prince George, B.C.- Schools are still in session, but some Prince George drivers seem to have skipped the class about the speed limit in a school zone.
RCMP say last Friday members of the Prince George Regional Provincial Traffic Services and the Prince George Municipal Traffic Unit conducted school zone enforcement. During the school zone enforcement, they issued 19 speeding violations and another 5 drivers were charged with excessive speed which meant their vehicles were impoiunded for 7 days.
So just in case we have forgotten the rules, here’s the refresher class:
- When you are driving through a school zone during school hours, the posted speed limit is 30 km/hr.
- School hours are in effect Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson says there is a simple reason why the speed limit is reduced on roads that pass by schools, "Sometimes children do not pay as close attention to traffic as they should, so it is incumbent upon the drivers to be aware of the school zones, slow down to the posted 30 km/hr zone and watch for the people that are in the area. They may not be watching for you."

Message to city: To insure that speed limits can and will be unintentionally enforced, please refrain from doing repairs of any kind to the already disasterous pot holed, cracked, rutted, unpainted roads within school speed zones. Potential speedsters will come to the conclusion very quickly that reckless speeding will compromise most suspension systems of their vehicles. Less RCMP time spent watching for speeders, city can save money by just continuing to neglect these streets, and maybe an income plus for the parts and labour personal at our local repair shops. For example, try speeding on Rainbow Drive.
Hey Madonna, I for one really appreciate the crackdown, wish it would happen daily. But, what I’m really interested in, is how many Mothers did you catch, I think that would be a really interesting stat. i have seen a lot of 30 plus women speeding in school zones and have been passed by them in school zones, only for them to turn in to the school!
Grizzly1: you’re right on! I can’t believe how many women with kids in the car and a coffee or cellphone in their hands go racing around like its all life or death. Just hope it isn’t the latter.
I have to agree with with Grizzly1 and Give more. The most impatient, ignorant, distracted drivers are people dropping their kids off at school.
I drive my daughter to and from school daily. I obey all posted speed limit sign and pedestrian crossing’s. I ALWAYS see blatant speeders and people in general of both sexes. My theory- It is not a race, yet people seem to treat it that way. A few weeks ago a man came tearing into my child’s school lot WAY too fast. When I mentioned to him that he drove in here too fast being that there were sill plenty of kids around, I received an rude an ignorant response that Couldn’t be printed here. People need to remember we are all in this together. Slow down. Take a breath. Treat others as you want to be treated.
I walk past a school most morning and have to agree on the female Andretti’s.
Don’t play in the street and there won’t be any problems.
