Prince George, B.C. –Construction  of the Kin 1 arena in Prince George has hit a new “milestone” with the beetle killed wood ceiling being put in place. An exterior roof covering  will be placed over top of the   wood.

Manager of the CN Centre and Community Arenas, Andy Beesley, says the project,   is still projected to be complete this fall.  The roof installation is a little behind schedule, but the dressing room upgrades are way ahead of the planned timeline. The net result should still mean the facility will be complete this fall.  “We won’t be booking any major events into the new facility until after Christmas” says Beesley, as the staff will need some time to adjust their ice making and maintenance skills to the new conditions in the new facility. There is a delicate balance that needs to be “learned” says Beesley.

He says the dressing room upgrades are well ahead of schedule, but placing the roof on the building is a little behind schedule. “They are putting the roof on as quickly as possible, then they can start pouring more concrete, and get down to the work on the main structure” says Beesley.

From the inside, players and spectators will be able to   watch the action under a roof that is made entirely of beetle kill wood.  Although it may be reminiscent of the Richmond Olympic  Ice Oval which had a similar roof, Beesley says using as much wood as possible in this project was important to the City and the designers of this facility.

When all is said and done, the Kin Centre Complex Enhancement project will provide an Olympic standard size ice surface (200’x100’) which is 15’ longer and wider than the old surface. The completed project will also feature upgraded washrooms and rooms for players and officials.

These so called planks seem to be laminated wood from Penticton. Did Penticton have a huge beetle infestation, or did we ship them the beetle killed lumber??

In ten years when the beetle wood turns to dust then what?

You dont know much about beetle wood do ya? ;)

The real question is why the steel main beams when there are arenas that size built with laminated timber, even ones with double curves.

This is a public building in a town that is getting a six storey structural wood office building and we do not follow “wood first”.

Someone from City Hall please tell me why, when this went through the wood first screen, wood was not chosen.

Just one of many examples which happens to be closely aligned with the structural steel shape used locally. Seems Anaheim understands better than we do.

Given the Kin 1 rebuild and the RCMP station folly, perhaps it is time for someone at City Hall to take on the task to set some architectural standards that meet the needs of this community and this time in our history.
