Wow, no comments yet.
Been in Calgary for 2 months so far. One thing that I have noticed is that some of the decisions being made by the Calgary city council is so similar to that of PG’s council. They pretend to listen to the citizens and do what they have already decided. In Calgary’s case, the province gave the citizens a $52 million property tax break and the City of Calgary is deciding what to do with it.
The city had also just finished building an 88 room low income rental unit and it won’t be open until the fall, because it was not hooked to the the city sewer system.
The more that changes, the more that stays the same.
Have a safe weekend everyone.
I think the City staff do a great job of beautifying and maintaining our parks and boulevards. However, whoever is responsible for maintenance along the highway frontage area coming in to town, should maybe put some effort into it. And methinks that ugly weed-ridden barrier that was put up near the Casino, is a total eyesore! Good thing everything will be covered in snow for the big 2015 Games, right??
I agree, that is a major eyesore.
It looked quite nice when they first planted it. Someone must have forgotten that it had to be maintained and, that because of the design which makes it that much more visible than a flat stretch of land, its maintenance was that much more important.
Actually, it is a small version of the “engineered” slope along the lower part of University Way. I find it also to be an eyesore with all the sloughed sections which prevent vegetation to take a proper foothold.
If we ever get some repeated downpours which are enough to saturate the ground, it will start to move again, hopefully only in small sections.

Ha, ha, ha, … less than a month into re-election and Christy Clark is giving her political staffers an 18 % pay raise.
Hmmm.. I wonder how this is going to sit with all those unions who will be going on strike because 18% wage increases are not possible under a “net zero” and now “cooperative gains”mandate?
Christy’s top political staff member now makes almost $250,000 per year, much more than President Obama’s top political aide who makes $170,000 per year. It’s good to be the queen with our money… Bah ha ha : D
Have a good weekend everyone!
It’s just sad to see all the trees at cottonwood bare of green leaves, damn caterpillars! Sure hope the trees can survive a year with no foilage to create photosynthesis. I think we should have done some spraying when it was obvious what was happening.
mytwobits: “And methinks that ugly weed-ridden barrier that was put up near the Casino, is a total eyesore!”
Agreed. Maintenance is always forgotten after the fact. Didn’t it cost $1 million dollars, or am I mis-remembering? All for those residents with sensitive eyes and ears who didn’t want to come to grips with the fact they live next to a highway. Out of sight, out of mind… lol.
stamp out the catapillars, they are stealing our oxygen producing trees.
Why not dust the suckers when they are in a cocoon stage. kill them all.
with all the weeding etc to be done around the new Cancer Clinic, Duchess Park, and on and on the city had 3 workers out with the riding mower to cut the clover/grass inside the dog park for the dogs to run in. One worker to do the mowing and the other two to supervise. I agree with having a dog park but I think there are few more places in this city that could use mowing rather then there!!!
Drop down to Abbotsford and have look at landscape maintenance if you want to see how its done.
Cheers
Northern Lights Recovery Centre on the horizon – A new recovery centre is planned to help people with serious addictions and they say it could be up and running by the time the snow flies this year.
Location of land about 30 minutes from the City of Fort St. John.
Apparently plans for the centre have changed since the project was announced two years ago.
The centre will accommodate 20 patients â 10 men and 10 women â at a cost of $7,300 for the thirty-day program. Capital costs to complete the project are estimated in the $5 million range.
Huge Thank You to the city for sweeping off the Tyner Blvd Walkway to the University. The caterpillar crossing was almost impossible to walk on…snap, crackle & pop. Thank you!!!
Guesswhat. The Nechako Treatment Centre in Prince George was a co-ed 18 bed facility, with a 28 day treatment program. This facility was closed by the Provincial Government a few years ago.
The reason (excuse) for closure was that the 28 day treatment program was no longer successful, and the model had to be changed.
Hmmmmmmmmm.
Really! The city can afford to send equipment and opperator to clean caterpillars off a walking path. Wow what a joke.
Obama agreeing to arm the rebels in Syria? When he finally departs the White House his wife will probably ask him where he put his Nobel Peace Prize, to which Obama will reply, “It’s in the small box in the basement with my bowling trophies”. Yasser Arafat? PLO? Airplanes hijacked and blown up? People killed. He got a Nobel prize also. What a world, eh? Repaint me cynical.
The University Way sidewalks on on each side of the road to boot, are probably the most intensely used sidewalks in Prince George, outside of the core downtown streets.
I WAS pretty happy to see the road maintenance crews out in the Danson Industrial site patching Pacific/Boundary road. I state “WAS pretty happy” because I see that they patched a few of the potholes but not all.
Why would a patching/repair crew only patch a few potholes and leave all the rest? The ones that were left were only 50 feet from the ones repaired. Makes no sense and I sure hope I see them back out today finishing the job.
I am surprised they could find enough clover/grass in the dog park to cut. It is a mud hole in the spring. I think they should replace the clay/loam or wahtever mixture it is with a soild better able to withstand the type of use it gets.
Did they cut the weeds in the gravel area at the same time?
BTW, the new facility for children right next to the dog park seem to have a good selection of surfaces for the use which they are intended for. Well done!
Again, lack of maintenance. Build a nice facility, then let it go to the dogs …. :-(
lol – the exact thought process I had this morning bornandbred – except I said 30 feet
I thought that Penn rd and Boundary were on the repaving list this year.
Palopu, I know you’ve paid close attention to the Pine Valley issue. Do you recall how the possible sale got onto the KPMG core review list?
I see ICBC has filed a civil suit against some of the Stanley cup rioters… be nice to see if they are still so smug coming out of court when they find out they have to buy someone a Lexus LOL
“Better a big hole for a fresh start than to waste hundreds of thousands to bring an eye sore up to current code.”
Interesting point of view. Luckily not all communities have that point of view.
Just visited one yesterday. Coupeville on Whidbey Island in Washington State – a small community, but actually growing rather than getting smaller or being stagnant.
The buildings, unlike places like Nelson, are virtually all wooden building. The oldest I saw had a national historic places plaque on it showing that the building was built in 1866. That building is the blue one in the linked photo.

We ate in a wonderful “bar”, as the US calls them, with a great long bar at the entrance as tradition dictates and nice views of Penn Cove where some of the best mussels come from.
It is not the buildings that are the problem; it is the attitude/mindset of the people who live in the community.
IMHO, the mindset of the people in PG needs a bit of tweaking, to say the least.
It looks a lot like main street in Chase, Gus.
I think there are plenty of people here who have the right attitude as far as working together for the betterment of the community. Might I point to all the volunteers who repeatedly turn out to pull off some event, etc.
However, there are some people in some key positions who are not out for the betterment of the city and ALL of its people, and some residents tend to get fed up and develop negative attitudes as a result. After a while that undercurrent starts dragging things down.
Too many shisters is not good for the broth.
Had the opportunity to drive by around three at that new French School where Gladstone elementary used to be.. Kinda dangerous driving thru there what with the buses parked on the street and parents trying to drive outta the parking lot… The buses are huge and difficult to see past them.. Why haven’t they banned vehicles in the parking lot and allow the buses to pull in to the parking lot instead.. Gladstone Street is pretty narrow as it is..
Kinda like an accident waiting to happen there.. The school are good neighbours and hoping someone reads this and hopefully make that area safe for everyone, including the kids.
Noooo I wasn’t driving a smart car thru there :) Nor a big truck
The relocation of Pine Valley… and notice it is the relocation …. has been under discussion ever since the possible sale of the PG club.
Here is a 2010 story on 250 which is certainly not the first one ….
As far as KPMG goes, I doubt there was anything in their report that did not have its origin from City Hall.
blog/view/15207/1/pine+valley+friends+state+their+case?id=143&st=12510
from the above:
Councillor Debora Munoz says the development of the Golf Course lands has always included a Pine Valley Golf Course, although the site may not be the exact current location. She is reluctant to make a promise to keep the course at the existing site when the new neighbourhood plan has not yet been developed “I would like to keep Pine Valley and I would like to see it in the context of the overall Pine Valley Community Plan.”
One Democrat …. I agree with your assessment of many of the people in PG. We do not have a high volunteer contingency here without people who care. They do.
BUT ……
If one is going to be successful in fundraising or getting some favours coming their way, one has to be careful what is said with respect to those one thinks is going to pull the right strings for your next project. Best to keep low on some controversial topics …. ;-)
Stillsmokin. That isn’t a “New French School” at Gladstone. Gladstone is the school that was available for the children who were displaced as a result of Highglen Elementary burning. It is a Montessori school not a French school.
The bus is bussing the kids from highglen up to Gladstone and back for the time being until a decision is made as to how long the children will be out of highglen.
Just pointing that out for clarity sake.
One Democrat.
Pine Valley was put on the Core Review List at the public meeting. It was brought up by an individual who sat at the table I was at, and at the time it seemed to me that it was a set-up. After he mentioned Pine Valley, the Mayor approached the table, and stated. **I wonder if the City should be in the golf course business**
So you can draw your own conclusions.
I vaguely remember reading in the Citizen many years ago that the PG Golf and Curling Club land was given to the club by the city for 1 dollar with the provision that the land would revert back to the city if the club folded or relocated. Does anyone know if this is correct?
To bornandbred–Don’t you know–that’s called job security for the city crews? lol They just keep rotating the patching crew around and around. Fill two-miss three, back in two weeks if we’re lucky.
Nice place to visit Gus… I visit there often and have had the same Penn Cove muscles. Whidbey Island is our favourite get-away. We go at least 3 times per year. Langley and Port Townsend are just as wonderful.
If you get a chance, visit the Spoiled Dog Winery.

“Did you know when this certificate was requested Pat Bell was still in office?”
Yup, that was made clear in the post. It was also made clear in the post that the certificate was received.
It was folded during the send cycle. That was Canada Post’s fault, not the people who sent it.
So what is your point?”
Someone definitely needs reading comprehension schooling.
Interesting graphic on the thickness of the ice sheets during the last ice age.
