RDFFG Presses Forward With Community Forest Licence Application

Friday, June 21, 2013 @ 3:57 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The Regional District of Fraser Fort George is moving forward with plans to work with the Lheidli T’enneh and the Cattlemen’s Association to achieve a community forest license.

Originally, the plan had been to have an agreement that would see the RDFFG and Lheidli T’enneh being partners with the City of Prince George as the City moved to expand its community forest license. The City withdrew when it became clear stakeholders in the agricultural sector had trust issues with the City of Prince George being involved.

Now, the Regional District and Lheidli T’enneh have teamed up with the Prince George Cattlemen’s Association, and RDFFG Chair Art Kaehn says things should move forward “This new relationship will consider their (agricultural )interests better because they have a stake in this relationship. The Cattlemen will have a direct interest in the project, so I believe this will help move this along more easily than in the past.”

A letter of intent has yet to be signed by the three parties, after which an official application will be made.

Kaehn says the focus for the community forest will be development of more agricultural land, promote agricultural research education as well as promote some development in the region. “There’s a lot of benefits” says Kaehn “The community will also have an opportunity to have a direct voice in resource management of these lands around their communities, there’s a whole suite of things that are going to occur as a result of this.”

While the City of Prince George is no longer involved, Kaehn says the proposal wouldn’t be where it is today without the work of City staff “They poured a lot into the project and as a result of their support, we’ve all gained a better understanding of the community forest project and the best way for it to proceed, so we are very thankful to the City of Prince George and all the support they have given to this project.”

Is the province gonna get some 2X4s or are they destined to stay logs and get shipped off to you know where?

I’m just wondering what more of our standing timber in and around this town, they are looking at to cut? Seems to me that after all the beetle killed removal and windstorms taking a lot more, we should be planting more trees rather than to be clearing more of them out. I love trees and would like to see more trees in this town.
