Major Construction on NorthWood Pulpmill Road

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 @ 3:56 AM
Prince George, B.C. – There will be major traffic restrictions on a stretch of Northwood Pulpmill Road for the next month or so.

The City is installing a watermain along the southbound lane of Northwood Pulpmill road between Clubhouse Drive and Aberdeen Road . ( map at right shows stretch of road – between red dots -impacted)  that will be  closed)

This work will  mean the southbound lane of Northwood Pulpmill road will be closed to traffic while the northbound lane will be open to local residents and pulpmill traffic. Large truck traffic that is southbound on Northwood Pulpmill Road will be detoured to Highway 97 via Noranda Road.

The City says the new watermain will provide an improved and more reliable flow. New hydrants will also be installed which will improve fire protection in the area.

Accidents for sure at Noranda Road and 97 North.

They should put the water main on the North bound lane and or flip the traffic to keep the south bound chip trucks using the lighted intersection to access highway 97.

Southbound chip trucks accessing highway 97 from Noranda road is the most dangerous accident waiting to happen that I can think of. Turning north off of Noranda is bad enough at that spot, but crossing the north bound lane to make the south bound lane is simply not doable in a safe manor. Heavy traffic on the Hart 500 is bad enough to pick a spot to cross traffic with 70-foot units… then throw in a blind corner and its not going to be a safe spot at all.

My advice is they have to work around the chip trucks and alternate the traffic and keep it all on Northwood Pulp Mill Road if they want to save lives.

Noranda only works for trucks coming and going to/from the North. To try and make that corner from the south onto Noranda will require both lanes, and if a truck has to stop on 97 to wait for a vehicle turning off of Noranda that is a huge safety hazard. To rear end a sudden stopping chip truck is like running into a brick wall. Safety hazard as well if a truck has to cross the northbound lane of 97 and merge onto a blind corner of fast moving southbound traffic.

I know north wood asked the city to postpone this until after north woods shutdown but the city said no. Hundreds of contractors will be travelling that road everyday.. Just shows how ignorant our city is. I hope there are no accidents as a result of this.

I have to agree with Eagleone. This is setting up a very dangerouse situation.

Trying to make a left off Noranda to 97 South is bad enough under so called normal conditions.

I think the City better re visit this plan.

Perhaps ICBC should get involved, as they will ultimately be paying the damage claims.

Another situation for Ben Meisner to tackle. He will gets things put to right.

Assuming what PVal says is true, its almost laughable. On the same day that the news shows Mackenzies mayor hosting a conference on industry working together on things like roads, we find out our mayor cant work together with its own community on things like roads…

Don’t let yer left hand know what yer right hand is doing.

I don’t imagine its as simple as phoning the city and asking them to delay a project for a few weeks. There must be some sort of schedule, especially when contractors are involved. For instance, the city has one paving contractor that they deal with. To delay the project by 3 weeks, well maybe that doesn’t work with Columbia Bit’s schedule and Northwood Pulp Road won’t get paved this year. Or the same with another contractor. Plus, the number of frost free days around here, construction seasons are short. I’m just sayin’, I doubt a change of plans is as easy as PVal thinks it is.

Middle finger.. Yes it is rather easy.. Hey guys.. We are doing a different road until the shutdown is complete. They have posted the roads they are doing. Not to hard to change plans when it involves the safety of people.. Unless you don’t care about the citizens that is

Well,… okay, you’re right P Val. Easy peasy. Fortunately I don’t live or work at that end of town, and, if the city says one month, you can bet it will be twice that long.

Why don’t they say what it is really for? The rezoning they just allowed for the area?

The city allows rezoning in an area for a private entity and the taxpayers get to pay to supply services to the area. The services to the old PG Hotel site was 800k,what do you suppose this will cost us?

What rezoning took place there?
