Canadians Rally to Help Calgary

Monday, June 24, 2013 @ 4:15 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The new flood in Calgary is one of assistance, as offers to help Albertans are coming in waves.

B.C. has offered whatever assistance it can, as has the Federal Government in the wake of the Bow and Elbow Rivers spilling their banks. There are reports the Saddledome is holding some 40 million gallons of water, downtown Calgary was open to building owners yesterday for self assessment, and some parking lots will be open today, but no one should expect “business as usual.”

Yesterday, tens of thousands were allowed back to the Calgary homes, but thousands more remain on evacuation order, as some 27 communities are under a state of emergency.

The Red Cross says the easiest way for people to help at this point, is to make a cash donation, and you can do that by clicking here or by calling 1-800-418-1111

If you are interested in finding out the latest information from the City of Calgary,   that information can be located here.

Drive BC is reporting the Trans Canada hiaghway is open to passenger vehciles only between Golden and Banff  but remains closed to commercial trucks east of Golden.  According to Drive BC, the Trans Canada Highway remains  closed east of Banf because of numerous  washout sites in Alberta.  An update is expected at 9 this morning.

“The Red Cross says the easiest way for people to help at this point, is to make a cash donation”

I do not know whether people see the irony in all of this.

It is one thing to offer help to repair damages to infrastructure so that things can be repaired as quickly as possible, it is another thing to donate cash to a province that is the richest in the land.

One would think that the Alberta Government would have the best capacity to help when it comes to funds needed to do so.

Have they not declared a state of emergency so that funds can be released to those individuals and families in need due to the flooding as well as those organizations set up to get goods and other assistance to those families?

I understand that there are 25 communities who have declared a state of emergency.

Isn’t Alberta part of Canada?

“Calgary, Alberta floods: relief on its way, says premier; Premier promises speedy response”

“It’s the provinces responsibility to provide disaster relief funding and Redford said her government has $1 billion set aside already. She also said, however, that they were no longer shooting for a balanced budget as they evaluate how much funding it will take to rebuild.”

Sure go ahead and rebuild on the flood plain! Idiots! Better set aside another billion!

The past decisions to build on flood plains in this country are sure costing present day taxpayers a lot of money.

Sure Noway – Call up premier Redford and tell her to move Calgary…where would you suggest they move it to?
*eyeroll*

Bigger eye roll interceptor! Don’t let them rebuild. Pay out the property owners and apologize for selling to them in the first place. Otherwise you you will have to keep bailing them out! No pun intended.
