This Credit Card Scam Is Slick

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 @ 5:07 AM

Terrace, BC – RCMP in Terrace are warning of the latest credit card scam aimed at duping you into providing the fraudsters with the final piece they need to use your credit card.

Dubbed the ‘Credit Info Scam’, Media Relations Officer, Constable Angela Rabut, says the scam begins with a phone call and, by the end, many victims have given up the three-digit security code on the back of their credit cards. (photo at right courtesy BC RCMP)

Constable Rabut says, "This one is pretty slick because they provide you with all of the information except the one piee they want from you, the security number on the back of your card."

Constable Rabut says the person calling pretends to be from the Security and Fraud Department of your credit card company, he or she provides a badge number and says your card has been flagged for unusual purchases.  The caller goes on to provide some details about your credit card.  "You actually say very little," says Rabut.  What the scammer wants is that three-digit security number.

Constable Rabut points out that credit card companies will never ask for that information because they already have it on file.  "By the time you get your statement you will see charges for purchases you did not make and, by then, it is too late or more difficult to file a fraud report with the credit card company."  Rabut suggests telling the person on the phone you will call the credit card company yourself for verification of their claims.

Had a call about my Visa, I told them I was very concerned about this and asked to talk to a supervisor. Spoke with the next scammer who came on the line…kept saying I was very concerned with the security of my information and he assured me that he understood and the my information was completely safe with him…after a couple minutes of this, I asked him how my information could be safe if they didn’t know that I didn’t have a Visa card? They hung up :)

The RCMP state: “This one is pretty slick because they provide you with all of the information except the one piee they want from you, the security number on the back of your card”

Looks to me that one of those two statements must be wrong.

If they have all your info but not your security code, you’re still in trouble. You can still do a lot of online purchasing without that number.

Just tell them to cancel your card! You don’t need the 3 digit code to do that! If such a place exists online like JB says then if you get a call like that then you should cancel your card.

Same Call about 2 Years ago, I was told I charged 500 Buck to NETFLICKS and my Security Number was needed to take the Charges of. I told them where to go to, turned around and called Visa and got a NEW Card.
If you pick up the Phone and you have a long
Pause , it’s a Call Centre, the Queue is Voice activated, so just hang up, it’s the best Way and you avoid talking to the scam Artists.

Constable Rabbit says that they wouldn’t ask for the security code if they were from your credit card company.

This isn’t correct, as the card companies always ask for your security code, to show that you have it in your possession.

Catch them and have a public execution!
