Prince George, B.C. – The Chief Librarian with the Prince George Public Library is “movin’ on up” to that centre of higher learning on the hill.

Allan Wilson has been appointed University Librarian with the University of Northern B.C. Library where he officially takes over September 1st. Wilson became the city’s Chief Librarian in 2004 following similar stints in Prince Rupert and St Catherine’s, Ontario. He has been at the forefront of significant changes at the Prince George Library, including construction of the unique SkyLab computer lab and loft, a new automation system and the Knowledge Garden project, which includes a reading garden and performance space near the Bob Harkins Branch.

Wilson has also been recognized for his active involvement in the community, his promotion of the library and literacy and his innovative fundraising methods. Public Library Communications Co-ordinator Andrea Palmer says succession plans are in place as the Library Board looks to fill Wilson’s position.

Perhaps we could make the Communication Coordinator the Chief Librarian and not fill her position. Just askin.

Is the Core Review people listening???

While it is true that when someone leaves, I is a good time to review the entire staffing picture, such a review might show an existing position may not need to be filled at the moment. This would allow people to move up and the savings may be the salary and benefits of the lower position.

A full succession plan may take care of even that component. If there is movement in staff, it will give everyone who enjoys working at the library an incentive to remain. Lack of movement and possible promotions is often a key reason for people to leave a small operation with low turnover.

There is another side to this as well. If there are positions open or opening up at the UNBC library, he may be in a position to bring one or two people he can work well with up to the UNBC.

One can do all the succession planning in the world. When a key person leaves, especially to take on a position in the same community, all bets are off as to how it will eventually play out.
