Prince George, B.C. – Three major capital projects in the City of Prince George will be wrapping up before 2013 is through.
The Boundary Road project, which was started in 2010, is expected to be completed by the end of October this year.
Despite the fact the project is a year overdue, the staff report to City Council says the project is “on budget.” The Boundary Road project will link Highway 16 East to 97 south, be a new dangerous goods route, and be a prime access road for development in the Airport area. Airport area land developers have contributed $6.5 million to the construction of the 6.8 kilometre stretch of roadway. The balance of the $28 million dollar price tag has the City paying $6.5 million and the Provincial and Federal Governments each kicking in $7.5 million.
The report also notes the two other major projects that are underway, namely the RCMP building on Victoria Street and the Kin Centre.
The RCMP building is said to be nearly 80% complete. When it comes to furnishing the new facility, the report to Council says “a substantial portion of the system furniture has been gifted to the City by the RCMP E Division from a recently closed facility in the lower mainland and the City is working with the original system furniture supplier to arrange a complete furniture install.”
The final 20% of the work involves exterior site works, landscaping, interior finishing, wiring, lighting and security installations.
So far, the project has cost $25.3 million dollars. It is expected the RCMP will move into the facility by the end of October.
The there is the Kin Centre.
It is said to be about 70% complete.
This $16.5 million dollar project is expected to be completed by late fall, and full use of the arena is not likely until the end of December.
The main roof panel installation is complete, the risers for the bleacher seating have been poured and the electrical and mechanical systems are being installed.
But there is still a lot of work to do.
The arena floor slab has to be poured and cured for a month, the exterior walls on the south and north side, have to be completed and there is a myriad of mechanical and interior works that need to be done. With the later than expected completion, arena staff continue working with user groups to ensure they have ice surfaces to use until this one is ready.
So far, $10.7 million has been spent on this project.
