Weather Deflates Nechako River Float
PG SAR Search Manager, Heather MacCrae, and Jim Mummery with the PG Jet Boat Association at the Nechako Boat Launch this morning
Prince George, BC – It appears the rain has sunk this year’s Nechako River Float…
What’s become an annual event, after a Facebook announcement promoting the idea a few years ago, usually sees hundreds of people taking to the river to float from Miworth to Cottonwood Island Park on ‘floaties’. Sometimes those floatation devices are of a questionable nature and people get into trouble – prompting RCMP, Prince George Search and Rescue, the BC Conservation Officers Service, PG Fire Rescue and the Prince George Jet Boat Assocation to patrol the Nechako over the course of the hours-long event.
Given the scorching weather over the past two weeks, PG SAR Search Manager, Heather MacCrae, says emergency personnel were concerned there could be more than one thousand people taking to the water for today’s event. This morning’s rain put a damper on things.
Jim Mummery with the Prince George Jet Boat Association says all was quiet at the launch point in Miworth this morning. PG Fire Rescue and Conservation Officers remain out patrolling the river, but MacCrae says they have not seen anyone in the water. So what was to have been a day of vigilance for the emergency personnel has, instead, become a day for some on-the-water training – practising pulling people into the boats, tossing out safety floatations, etc.
Mummery says, "This weather might save somebody’s life."

Isn’t there an annual Miworth to Foothills bridge event that hasbeen going on alot longer then facebook has been around?
Read the following post which were posted in 2011 when the non-event was postponed.

Twice within 2 years people were saying it was not safe. Figure it out folks. The “pioneers” of the event who put it into August/September may just have known what they were doing.

Then again mummery it may not have. Predicting the possible future is commonplace these days. It could have, it might have etc. such a fun game to play.
Maybe it caused a accident because someone didn’t attend the event and they will be suffering life long repercussions from it. Maybe baby.. See it is fun
P Val, don’t pick on Jim. He is a great guy and volunteers his time for this event. Also, he has lost a child so I believe he just wants everyone else’s childre to be safe.
I know this may sound a bit harsh to you bornandbred, but people’s life experiences are not available to everyone and, whether they are or not really does not change the facts, such as in this case, the reality of taking a different fork in a course of events does not make the outcome any better or worse.
This event’s fork has been blocked, so the results of different forks being chosen by those who were going to take this fork may very well end up worse in the long run.
The thing we will not likely know is that the person who we find out had an ATV accident on Saturday afternoon was going to be floating down the river or watching people float down the river.
And those people who are ending up doing exercises to practice, well one or more may have an incident causing serious harm to themselves or equipment which would not normally have happened.
So P Val is just relating how life works from his POV. Simple. Perhaps if Mummary’s history had been public information and P Val was aware of it, the post may have been written differently.
However, the concept is extremely valid no matter the point of view.
sorry … Mummery …..
Tell me the river is low and this would have been a good time to go, and I’ll agree.
This event, to make it safer, should be held in low water, right? Less crap in the water to trick people up.
Try around 10 August, when the water levels are calming down, less logs and branches in the water, slower water. I’ve done it, it’s fun, but calmer water tends to make it a little bit safer.
My hats off to all the enforcement, just wanna make sure everyone has a great time safely.
Just saying P Val’ comment was just a silly thing to say in this circumstance. I think most people understand why Jim would say “This weather might save someone’s life.” The article is about the river and the people who volunteer their time to try to make an event like this safe.
I really do not care what the article is about. I care what the river is about, what Prince George as a habitable place is about, and what life is about.
When I arrived here in 1973 it was a place one could have some fun it. That included something called the “Simon Fraser River Raft Race”.
That race was part of a circuit of raft races in BC and Alberta who share rivers fed by mountains.
People that were not born till about 1980 or so and people who were aware of their surroundings then but have grown too old to remember some things or never participated in those types of community events will not come to post on here to remind others that this river float business is nothing new.
The one thing that is new is the time of year. The raft race was a full month later at the end of August. I think many people have already made the observation on this site, both this year and previous years that this event is held too early due to the nature of the water flow.
Luckily there are some recoded archives available to point to so that there is proof of the events in our history. I have attached the front page article from August 26, 1983 as well as the article written post race.

Even the City was going to take part in the race, but they missed their entry deadline.
So, if your friend is concerned about safety, then get him to work on pushing the “float” into the end of August, that will go part of the way to make it a safer event. The work on the nature of the “float” to move it from a “free for all” into a more regulated event such as the raft race was.
Don’t just remove the fun and community spirit out of every event this City has ever taken on. Work with people to make this a fun city and a safe city.
In case you did not realize, THAT is part of what people look at when they decide to move to place A rather than B.
This is not an either or situation. Most of us can deal with more than one criteria at a time in order to deliver a great event.
I know people who are going to New York in the heat of the eastern seaboard summer. People die of exhaustion during high heat and humidity events. We are not used to high humidex weather.
So, they really should not have gone because they not only put their lives at risk driving to a big city airport but also flying, and most importantly in the context of this discussion maybe the weather may kill one or both.
Water is a killer in Canada, especially the combination of lakes and power boats.
Lol there’s aaalways gotta be a troll eh. Hope you’re enjoying your summer proving your intelligence to the world via the interwebs Gus. Anyway, it certainly has been proven through local history that our rivers are dangerous and do take people’s lives. As a former miworth resident and float event participant I’ve often thought that it was just a matter of time until the party atmosphere of the yearly event would trump people’s common sense and end in tragedy. We can all make things safer for the community by fostering constructive, supportive communication and connections. I think that is what all of these volunteers are trying to do. Cheers to those with good intentions! And to those who want to argue for the sake of arguing, I suggest you rethink your approach :) peace and love pg!
You said it Pg4lyfe. Be safe everyone and kudos to Jim, Heather and other volunteers that give of their time and expertise to keep us safe from unforeseen circumstances and sometimes from our own follies.
“I’ve often thought that it was just a matter of time until the party atmosphere of the yearly event would trump people’s common sense and end in tragedy”
I do not recall such an event with the Simon Fraser Raft race. If you do, please let us know what that event was and when it happened.
As far as the dangerous rivers go, I used to kayak on the rivers around here, including the Nechako from the property we had on Island Park Drive as well as the Bowron. I am familiar with ocean, lake as well as white water river water.
All I am saying is:
1. people do not know the background of individuals on here and P Val’s comment was a reasonable one. It was a simple comment that we cannot foretell the future, only in fantasy stories can that occur.
2. We cannot stop doing everything because some mishap may happen. In fact, we get into cars everyday with our families or by ourselves not knowing whether we will make it home alive as a result of making that decision. The probability of dying from a car accident is much higher than the probability of dying from drowning.
If that is being a troll, so be it.
This is not an issue to beat each other up. It is an issue to open up one’s mind and understand the different points of view people have.
Remember, I am probably the lead guy on here who thinks people should be more careful with ATV’s since they are killing machines if not used properly. And I get attacked over that.
There were no complaints about Mummery being concerned about safety. There was a comment that no one can foretell the future. Even Mummery can’t do that. It was as simple as that.
It’s hard to read someone get scolded by GUS…. Opinion threads at times can be interesting, but 1000 word posts that contain links to back up your opinion are boring……. Jim thanks for volunteering, and your reasons have no bearing on why I thank you….
And to think it was all caused by a very innocent post by P Val, for which bornandbred scolded him within 5 minutes for no reason other than bornndbred knew Mummery personally and thought that the comment was unwarranted based on something that P Val was obviously not aware of.
bornandbred should have known better.
Is that a short enough scold?
Another link to back up the opinion that we used to have some fun community activities before we discovered potholes in our pristine streets.

Actually, those events are not really opinions, are they? They are the real thing. They are historic facts.
After the 1981 recession, PG started cocooning and forgetting how to enjoy themselves in the company of other people.
Now, there is an opinion. ;-)

I still believe we can’t predict the future :-)
OMG gus, take a valium or go for a run. Get outside or something. You are obviously a little tightly wound. Seriously. I say this as one human being to another. Relax a little. Life really isn’t that serious.
You do not like snowgolf ….. you should get out more often.
Snowgolf is serious??????
You can’t be serious about that?!
bornandbred does not agree with you P Val.
He/she must watch a lot of time travel movies. ;-)
Lol Gus. Guess so
Wow Gus… 1983. Back then the Prince George Citizen was actually a “community” newspaper and not the corporate and business run rag it is today. Thanks for the trip back in time!
