Taking a Ride On The Birth Of A Royal Child

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 @ 8:26 AM
The proper word would be tacky. That is when you try and ride on the publicity being created by the birth of a Royal baby  who  was dubbed "George"making him "Prince George".

Proclaiming his birth date a special day in the B.C.  City of  Prince George?  No problem.  Send off a letter of congrats from the Mayor and the "people" of the City?  No problem.  But when you try and take a ride on the coat tails of a Royal  baby, it becomes just plain old tacky, something you would expect to find in a Knick Knack Shop in Hawaii, but not, one would hope, in Prince George.

Mayor Green has now taken to penning a letter to the Vancouver Sun, talking about how we are "connected to royalty", as if the people of the province didn’t know we were named Prince George in honour of  a former Prince George many years ago. She takes the opportunity to talk about what great weather we have, how we’re are the center of the region, how you can buy a home for $250,000 grand, and how we like the pulp mills etc, etc, etc.

In the big picture, what does it make the city look like?   Well in my humble opinion it looks like we have reduced ourselves to a point that we will take any event to try and get some "publicity".

Now if you were a member of the Royal  family,  and looked at  Prince George to see a picture of a baby crib, blue balloons, and a blow up doll of Mr PG floating in the background , would you immediately go to your diary and try and find a date for a visit or are you more likely to say, just how far will you go to try and use the  child’s name  as a "marketing tool?"

I got a call from Halifax the other night  from a friend who is attending a conference  in the Nova Scotia capital.  He said when CBC brought up the story of "the crib, Mr PG, and the balloons", the room he was sitting in "suddenly lit up and they asked, you say you’re from Prince George?  Pity."

We might have been better served had we made up some Mr. P.G. bobble head dolls, and on the side we could have said "Prince George, the same name as the new royal baby" it would be no more tacky than the  moose head plaques  you can find for sale in Hawaii which carry the phrase " Souvenir of  Hawaii, the Aloha State".

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Hawaii is reaching a bit far…..I can think of a store a lot closer that sells what the English describe as tat* so maybe that is why the mayor fits the mold to a tee for such tacky behavior:) I wonder if there is a a Prince George of Cambridge section or shelf yet.

*Noun. 1. Rubbish, junk. Abb. of tatty. E.g.”You can’t wear that old cardigan, it’s tat.”

I share the same sentiments as you Ben, I am embarassed by other Prince George Citizens that made something so beautiful to the Duke and Duchess, and really cheapend the population of Prince George, by assuming that the town has a relationship with the name and baby and trying to sell Prince George with whatever the mayor and freinds feel they can use to bribe the royals to visit this name sake. Just like the pulpmills in this town, the City Hall reps just stink!!!!

I think you all are forgetting that the Royals dont really give a stink what we do ;)

Good ol Shari Green …. Classless to the end….

the Citizens of PG deserve just what they got for Voting her Mayor.

I have been ashamed to call PG my home since the day she got elected

That maybe true interceptor, but why would SG mayor of PG and the other clowns think that they would?

Little Prince George now wears diapers. Changed very often as per need. Here in PG we have to keep our “diapers” elected for four years. Too bad we can’t change them when needed. Bummer.

Not cool Green I am ashamed of are city for jumping on the band wagon like this. and the media saw an opp to suck the mayor in. to sell her more space just to make are city look like fools. Way to go. Thanks Ben keep it up.

She’s doing what a mayor should be doing: cheer leading for our city. Nothing she said was false or embarrassing. Whether or not it’s tacky is anyone’s opinion, but I’d rathe read her letter than some of the self trash talking some people continually do about PG.

I can’t believe in this day and age anyone still cares about crap like this. Who really cares about a baby born to 2 people they will never meet or have no clue they are alive. I say get a life. Nothing green does surprises me, she is basically a knickknack salesmen, afterall.

Well Ben, you missed it by a mile here. I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of Her Worship, but I was in Vancouver this morning, I saw that article, and I brought it home to show my family. When I told my daughter about it, her reaction ? “That’s cool. Nice to see the Mayor promoting our town”. I agree with her. Perhaps Mr.Meisner, if you had a better relationship with City Hall and our Mayor (her many faults and all) then you would see that on this one, she was doing what she was elected to do, promote our City. THIS is one man’s opinion. I’m Vikingnuck

I agree with Lenny and Vikingnuck. The mayor is taking advantage of some free publicity and promoting the city. Who knows? There are enough people enamored with celebrity that we may see a significant spike in tourism due to this coincidental baby naming.

What a joke… I found the whole thing embarrassing. The naming of the baby has nothing to do with this city.

I agree with Lenny and Co.

What is wrong with trying to drum up some positive publicity to a City that has far too easy of a time attracting negative publicity? McLeans, etc.

All that being said, I don’t think any significant number of people are coming here because our town is named “Prince George”.
