Friday Free For All – Aug. 2, 2013
Friday, August 2, 2013 @ 12:00 AM
First Friday of a new month, and heading into a long weekend. With the weather predicted to be "unstable" this might be a weekend when we are spending a little more time indoors than expected.
So, with that in mind, get the fingers flying on the keyboard because it is time for the FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL, your chance to speak up on the matters that struck a chord with you over the past week or so.
The rules are simple, and we ask that you obey them:
Keep it clean
Keep it legal
No bullying,
Although you may not agree with the opinions of others, treat them as you would wish to be treated, with respect. Name calling cannot be tolerated.

I was reading this article headlined “Trolls, bullies and fake names”.
An interesting read. What I found most interesting, though, is the response to the headline that one reader had.
Watch out, this is a cut and paste because I did not feel like rewriting it. ;-)
====================================
When I and the internet both were young, I was taught as basic internet safety to NEVER use my real name or any identifying information online because you never know who could see it.
Frankly I’m offended that my attempt to keep myself safe has been equated with trolls and bullies, along with the implication that nothing I say has any value simply because I refuse to use my real name.
I also believe my online life should be separate from my professional life, another incentive to go by an alias.
Thanks to Facebook (which I refuse to use) this concept and the concept of privacy have become so eroded that this idea of real names only has become so accepted.
One look at the Google + debacle with regards to fake names (or even names that they deemed acceptable) is proof enough of that.
A rethink of this article’s title and the stance of those involved with it, along with an apology would be much appreciated.
====================================
That was bang on, in my opinion. Where are we going with this twitter stuff and real names? I mean, how can one accept a guy calling himself Wiener or Weiner, and sending pictures of the namesake body part all over the internet and still think that he has a good chance of becoming the mayor of New York City?
I think what Northern BC needs is a really good mutual fund dedicated to industry in Northern BC. A fund that specializes in building a Northern BC that is sustainable and for the future economic stability of the North.
I was surprised to find that I could not direct RRSP or RESP funds into a Northern BC specific fund. Essentially everyone in Northern BC has our pensions, and RRSP’s, and investments locked up as capital for investment bankers in Toronto, and maybe Vancouver, where they have big global plans and invest everywhere else, but very little of that in Northern BC and very little advocacy on our behalf with our retirement invested capital. Elsewhere in the world they pool there investments very effectively for local economic benefits… Quebec is a good example of that.
What if we had a fund that focused on owning the industries that operate in the North, and advocated for the north, and was owned by the people of the North. I think it would be tranformative if city pensions, union pensions, private investors and industry itself had the opportunity to empower our own capital sovereignty… a good place to buy managed shares of equity.
Instead of a refinery owned by the Chinese taxing the north with the highest fuel prices in North America, so that the profits can build up the Chinese industry… or pulp mills that are foreign owned and owned by wall street (the hub of our forest industry)… or venture capital, pipelines, mines… you name it, if it was controlled by shareholders invested from the north for the north, then one could assume the decisions these corporations make, as it relates to their social license, would change dramatically.
I think the early seed capital for such a fund could first and foremost come from the Northern Trust which is now badly invested in Bay Street mutual funds losing money that could be lost invested in the north on worthwhile start-ups. Other early investors could be various municipal contingency funds, followed by private pension funds for northern residents and businesses.
If the Credit Unions don’t have the specialist to make it happen then maybe transform the NDIT by bringing in the appropriate people… or find a major commercial bank that would want to partner up. In times of tightening monetary policy if quantitative easing ever stops, maybe A Northern BC specific fund is something the major banks might be interested in to raise capital?
IMHO
Good find Gus. BTW that weiner in NY was leading in the polls last I heard. Its hard to swallow, but that’s what the first past the post system will get you. All the more argument for a transferable ballot to weed out the fringe element able to win with 26% of the vote.
I hope he does win just so everyone can see how flawed the system really is and we can all get good laughs out of NY for the next four years.
Obama, got elected and reelected. Shows the intelligence of voters. Like how Putin runs circles around him.
Then we have the chosen one, Trudeau?
Local comment—When is city hall(road dept) going to get the lines repaintd on the new paving? It sure didn’t take the highway dept long. I sure hope it gets done before the snow flies, but I’m not holding my breath.
Hey Eagleone. You can create your own customized fund. There are dozens of public companies operating in the North you can invest in. Many of them pay rather good dividends too.
It wouldn’t work, Eagle.
Not that it’s not a bad idea, but there is no possibility of it working because ‘macro-economically’ business profits as a percentage of sales are continually FALLING as ‘capital’ continually displaces ‘labour’, (and the CURRENT incomes DISTRIBUTED from ‘labour’, from which the ‘spending’ necessary to liquidate financial costs and book profits still largely derive).
You’d be back to the same problem those who see a ‘value-added’ future for BC, or any part of BC, can’t solve.
You would create a short term illusion of prosperity as largely borrowed capital was invested in your new industries. (This capital would be ‘new’ bank credit, issued as debt, simply because the investment of peoples’ existing ‘savings’ or ‘pension funds’ is the investment of money which has ALREADY been ‘costed’ into the price of some existing good or service.
When this money is ‘invested’ it creates ANOTHER ‘cost’ while the first ‘cost’ is still in existence. And that ‘cost’ CAN’T then be liquidated unless some more money equal to it is ‘borrowed’ to do it, somewhere in the economy.
What you’d get out of the whole exercise would be another variant of inflation. Which is really no more than a tax on your savings, and defeats the whole purpose while it prevents the genuine prosperity you were hoping to create. Eventually your new industries would be sold to outsiders who often have purposes intended for them far different than yours.
I see where the Canadian government has critized Russia for offering asylum to Snowden and saying that Canada never would have done it. Sure is different from the time Canada offered asylum to the US draft dodgers, they too were considered traitors.
What is being built at Domano and Ogrady? Another secret construction project like the one at Ferry and Ospika?
Nope, the one at Ferry and Ospika has a name on it now. Though I don’t recall what it is.
Awesome patching job on hwy 16 up the hill from Domano. That stretch was smoother prior to the work they did there. Now it’s a hwy of rumble stips.
Dough heads!
BC Safety Authority is in part of the building on Ospika.
Looked on the city website to see if any building permits have been pulled on O’Grady and the site has not been updated since mid June even though it is supposed to be updated bi-weekly. Guess the guy that approves it is back next week so might see something then-six week holiday must be nice.
Hard copies are available at city hall if you are real curious:)
A while back I went into my Scotia Bank. They had a sign on the counter that said, “Where are you going to be in five years. Investment wise?” I mentioned that sign to a teller. Then I added, “I don’t even buy green bananas”. Again I got some satisfaction of constantly being aware of my own mortality. Look around you and count your blessings. Everyone dies in alphabetical order because they are born in alphabetical order. Right?
Eagle One , your Northern BC fund would be very easy to set up and run/operate… The hard part would be attracting investors to put money into it.
Does anyone know why the power was out last night? On the East side of PG> BC Hydro doesn’t say squat about anything.
PGG
Still under investigation according to hydro website. One they find a cause it is normally posted along with the fix.

“Northern BC fund”
City of Prince George Downtown Core REIT….just think of the returns;)
Two more nights left for the local record breaking “sold out” Les Mis show. What an amazing experience it’s been to have been part of this experience!
LMAO! Still crying about others employment benefits?
When riding transit there isn’t much else to do but avoid sunburn from the glow of all the electronic devices, so I go into my own world and come up with random thoughts. I thought I’d share oneâ¦.
Why are there 10 Commandments? It seems awfully redundant. We could all live by one Commandment.
#1 Don’t be a jackass
That pretty much covers it, don’t you think?
Just think of all the trees that would have been saved over the centuries from not having to print so much extra scripture.
I prefer
1# Conform.
Short, simple and to the point in today’s society.
People need simple these days.
OMG I can’t believe it… I’m so lucky! I just got a travel voucher in the mail that entitles me to either a free cruise for 2 or $1300.00 in travel coupons.
Wait. is this too good to be true? YOU BET IT IS..
Just another scam I got in the mail yesterday and when I “Googled” the phone number 800-370-0510 all sorts of bad things showed up.
Just goes to show ya that you always have to be alert when these things arrive in the mail.
An elderly family member of mine was taken for a large sum of money about 6 or 7 years ago… A REALLY LARGE SUM…
At least now I get to test my paper shredder again *smiles*…
Newtechie: “Just goes to show ya that you always have to be alert when these things arrive in the mail.”
A little common sense goes a long way. Nobody is giving you something for nothing.
I think if more people gave others something for nothing, the world would be a better place.
Heck, it could be something as simple as a smile on the street to a complete stranger or buying a coffee for the person behind you in a lineup. It’s amazing how small little gestures like that can go a long ways in helping people through their day.
Tax Free Savings Accounts are very popular with the Federal Government and the Banks. But, try receiving just the tax free income from your TFSA? Not going to happen.
How about trying to set up a systematic monthly withdrawal from your TFSA? Nope, you can’t do that either.
Why do we want one of these Government designed and controlled tools to help us manage our money again?
My prediction is that we’re gonna have a dangerous weekend for forest fires. Really hope campers take care of their fires, lightning doesn’t need competition.
That means when people get drunk they don’t roll in the fire, they don’t forget to put it out BEFORE they pass out!
