One Person Killed in Old Cariboo Highway Accident

Sunday, August 18, 2013 @ 11:27 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Regional Provincial Traffic Services says one person has been killed in a single-vehicle accident early today on the Old Cariboo Highway.

Corporal Madonna Saunderson says that shortly after 2 am police and the Coroner’s Service attended the scene of the fatal accident south of Holmes Road. A pick-up was heading north on the highway when it left the road and slammed into a driveway approach. Cpl Saunderson says the driver and lone occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. She says the victim is a male, but his age, name and home town are not being released at this time as police are having difficulty locating next-of-kin.

The Corporal says while the investigation continues there is evidence that alcohol, speed, distracted driving and failure to wear a seatbelt were all contributing factors in the crash.   She says anyone who witnessed the accident is urged to call the RCMP.

The Old Cariboo Highway was closed for six hours while forensic experts identified and documented the evidence at the scene. Normal traffic flow resumed at 8 this morning.

The government may have to look into requiring vehicle manufacturers to interlock the starting and running of the engine with the locking of the driver’s seatbelt and passenger seatbelts if any seats are occupied.

(Now after writing this I shall duck and run for cover).

Yes and also engine shutdown if any wireless signals inside the car are detected.

So glad he didn’t take anyone else with him!
