Call for Outdoor Smoking Bylaw
Monday, August 19, 2013 @ 3:56 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The Canadian Cancer Society will be appearing before Prince George City Council this evening, calling on the City to develop a bylaw that would ban smoking in public outdoor spaces.
Citing the U.S. Surgeon General’s message “There is no safe level of exposure to second hand smoke” , the Cancer Society is calling on P.G. to join the growing number of B.C communities who have banned smoking from outdoor spaces, by developing a bylaw that would ban smoking on patios, public parks and playgrounds and civic owned properties including trails, plazas, beached and recreation facilities, bar and restaurant patios.
The Canadian Cancer Society says other communities which have such bylaws have found very little need for enforcement, that the public complies with the bylaw.

The Police State test. You know you now live in a police state when….
Actually I should have said… they know we will accept a police state when….
I would have no issues with that ban but then again I am not a smoker either then again it would be nice having not to walk around with butts all over the ground its not a pretty sight
Ohhh yaaaa smoking causes ALL these cancers people have nowadays… GET REAL
What’s next!!!! No peanuts in public incase someone is allergic
Ban the Big Gulp. To many fat people coming out of 7-11’s.
why doesn’t the government stop selling them? oh yeah its a cash cow! AND bylaw enforcement is joke in this town,so good luck with that
Smoking cures cancer!
Our cops don’t even enforce real laws… like they got time for this!
Besides the air in PG is worse than standing on top of a burning tire, a little tobacco ain’t gonna hut ya!
BCRacer nailed it – if smokers showed even the tiniest bit of courtesy and realized that some people HATE the smell they would move outta the way and everyone would leave them alone. Instead they muddy the waters with stats on cancer, throw in some comments about human rights blah blah – who cares? You want cancer go for it! But I dont want to smell that chit on my way in the door.
And while the cops are policing the smoking activities maybe then can write a ticket or two for the inconsiderate slobs who SPIT on the sidewalks. That is 10 times worse then smoke from someones cigarette.
Have to agree with you really4sure, the spitting in Prince George is disgusting. Just got back from holidays all through south BC and even the states and didn’t see any spitting there. Neither was there smoking in public areas. It was definitely cleaner and healthier. PG should follow suit.
Why don’t they name the communities, see if there are butts at these places like parks, and see how much enforcement they have had. Most restaurants have added patios mostly to keep and attract smoking clients.
We have 150+ parks in PG city limits not to mention trails. People don’t comply with leash, muzzle, and pooper scoop bylaws and a lot even flaunt it – so what makes them think they will abide by this one? People still talk on cell phones in their cars too, just more sneaky about it.

Sorry – clicked refresh and it resent
Maybe Tim’s could hire “roll checkers”. People who will stand just inside the door of the donut shop, grab some ones, or for that matter anyone’s “spare tire, love handles or in the case of ladies, muffin tops” and then yell to the clerk in a soup Nazi kind of way, “No donut for you!” In that way Timmy’s could explain they care about your heart.
We were so poor, that when I was growing up I had to inhale third hand smoke.
I’ll take smoke anyday over the ” spitting” thing. If you think its bad in pg, come to Vaderhoof. You need rubber boots to walk down our streets. Fking pigs come in our town every day to drink , spit and piss there pants and pass out.
“The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule.”
Inhaling second and third and fourth hand smoke reminds me of the fact that we all inhale second and third and fourth hand breath …….. :-(
At least with smokers they let us know where their breath has been exhaled and we can avoid it …. :-)
The airport tried a no smoking ban for the whole airport grounds but it didn’t work so there is now a smoking area across the road from the terminal. If people think this ban will work, they are only fooling themselves. All this is, is a feel good thing the cancer society is trying to do to make it look like they are doing something.
Concerned about spitting that is a laugh riot considering PG is dog poop capital of Canada. Dogs peeing and popping on everything in sight. More smoking bylaws, hell does anyone know of any bylaws that are enforced now?
Phone about a bylaw infraction they are more interested in you and if you don’t give them your first born they say there is nothing they can do when all they have to do is drive by to see the infraction.
Maybe if the smokers actually followed the laws that are in now this wouldnt be brought up. Smokers huddled outside doors so you have to walk through the cloud of death to enter or exit a building rather than move to an appropriate distance away ( which the signs state) Also they stink when they come right back inside after having a fix.
One thing I have noticed in PG compared to Ontario ( was there on vacation this summer) is we have way less smokers here. I was a minority with being a non smoker. The amount of cigarette butts on the ground there was disgusting as well.
Smoking makes the government to much money to make it illegal. Thats what baffles me.. they will allow people to commit slow suicide by smoking..but Marijuana is illegal and has no addiction, minimal health affects and is a medicine.

The airport is much more tolerable now that they built that shelter away from the doors. The last couple of times I was at the airport it was refreshing not to have to dodge the smokers hanging out by the shuttle.
ban the cigarette filter … then the butts would be biodegradable and the smokers could enjoy the full taste of the tobacco … I would add the standard ;-) except I am half serious
I would tolerate 2nd hand smoke over 2nd hand halitosis any day of the week.
I don’t care if you smoke but can you at least use mouthwash? Please and thank you.
:-)
I am allergic to cigarettes, but smokers should have some rights too. To the comment from anotherside you are quite right about the cigarette filter, the stronger the filter the worst the second hand smoke is. I have been around people that roll their own without filters and I don’t get as sick. Plus I know some one that rolled his own without filters and the doctor could not believe how clean his lungs were. Maybe it is the asbestos, etc in the filters that is causing all the problems. I don’t like walking through a group of smokers but for the short time it takes I can do it. It is the marijuana smoke that really makes me gag and it can be just be on your clothes.
Speaking of going off on tangents, Pval can you back up marijuana is relatively safe, amazing. Arsenic is used in medicines.
I just don’t understand how people of PG can have this much concern about 2nd hand smoke. If you were to get an outside impartial person to do an air quality test with particulate break down of our local air you would think nothing of tobacco smoke. Our local government tells us only enough to keep us from running scared. All in all it’s like fighting over a ant hill while there is a volcano in our backyard.
to graymare:

I read somewhere recently that the weaker cigs with big filters caused the smoker to suck/inhale harder to get the nicotine hit … the result is the fine particulates get pulled deeper into the lungs … kinda makes sense as cigar and pipe smokers (shallow inhalers) tend to have higher rates of throat cancer will ciggie smokers (deep inhalers) are higher on the lung cancer rates
Let’s start a new campaign in PG … BAN THE FILTER … I am sure the Vancouver Sun would love it :-)
Another great reason to visit
Las Vegas more often..You can smoke inside and drink on the street..a perfect location, and no one is waiting to beak you off about it either.
Ban smoking completely at the hospital, no exceptions parking lots included
security could hand out the smoking fines.
Well marijuana has not be shown to cause cancer, smoking does. No spousal abuse has been a result of marijuana smoking, but millions from drinking alcohol.
makes it relatively safe dont ya think ?
I imagine after a hard day of breaking rocks, a person comes home to find their stash has been smoked, could cause a spousal abuse situation.
Is there a conspiracy to kill the restaurant business in BC.
Institute more rigorous anti drinking and driving laws with stronger enforcement focused on impaired driving, then ban patio smoking.
So if you smoke, don’t bother with going out for a nice meal because you are not welcome.
The funny thing is that I see more smokers going to the pub, cabaret and restaurant. I know that is anecdotal evidence.
So if non-smokers a less likely to go out for a meal, and smokers are not welcome, who are the customers that are left?
I don’t smoke, but this issue is the canary in a coal mine to see who does not respect the rights of others.
If someone is smoking outside then its not going to hurt you if you give them ten feet. I hate the smell of smoke, but everyone has their vice and we shouldn’t be trying to manage other peoples lives when they do no harm to others. An annoyance is not enough to trample on peoples rights with ever increasing new laws.
If a smoker goes quietly away when their rights are taken from them, then what does that say about their resistance to the taking of yet more rights?
I cut my smoking in half since the doctors removed one lung.
Here ya go Pval http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/marijuana-use-and-its-effects
Check out impairment, aggression risks.
Who did the study sea mutt?
It turns out that 90% of the studies done where paid for by the pharmaceutical companies trying to keep marijuana illegal so it won’t cut into their profits. So check your sources first..
In Indonesia they use smoking as a cure for acne, cancer, sore throats etc, all the studies done over there by the cigarette companies.
Doc Gupta just took a year to look into marijuana as a medicine. He learned a lot. Take a read nd I would be interested to see what you think.
hdroadking states; “I’ll take smoke anyday over the ” spitting” thing. If you think its bad in pg, come to Vaderhoof. You need rubber boots to walk down our streets. Fking pigs come in our town every day to drink , spit and piss there pants and pass out.”
Thanks for the confirmation… I heard Vanderhoof was one of the most racist places to live in Canada.
Like I said arsenic is used as a medicine. He he conspiracy theories
So you say no harm can come from breathing in smoke.
Second hand smoke outdoors is not a health issue, except to the person smoking. All the panty waist nancys who fear imminent lung cancer from walking by some people smoking should either stay home or take a reality check. Really, you are all up in arms over a whiff of smoke, but apparently not concerned about all the other sources of fine particulate in the air? If this issue was centered around smoking in confined indoor public spaces, I could get on board with it, but outdoors? Canadian Cancer Society, I belive you try to do good work but back off already.
metalman.
I can’t believe some people are making others feel like criminals for smoking out side as the government still makes a killing off the tax of selling them. And lets face it PG is no perfect air quality town anyways, When I drive though the down town every day on the way to work it can be breath taking thick stench.
I didnt say no harm can come from breathing in smoke. there are ways to get the THC from marijuana that doenst include smoking it :)
P Val, I watched the Dr. Gupta program and the marijuana they were using for medical use had very low THC. The part of the marijuana that they need for medical use does not make you high. I remember when the Canadian Government was growing medical marijuana the users said it wasn’t any good as they were not getting high but it had the drug that they needed.
Also on the Dr. Gupta program they showed that the THC in marijuana was at 1% in 1970, 13% today with some testing as high as 39%.
graymare… here is some other info for you. Marijuana is NOT like alcohol.. you can only get so “high” once you are “high” you can smoke all the weed you want and you do NOT get any “higher” so once your system absorbs so much THC is can not absorb anymore..so all you are doing is wasting marijuana.
Also there are some medical issues that THC does help out, seizures, speach impediments, lack of appetite etc.
Anyway.. if there is ANY medical benefit from this drug it should be used. If you listen to any commercial about todays drugs and you listen to the possible side affects its worse than the medical problem its supposed to help with.. Side affects of Marijuana do NOT include death, anal leakage, blindness, erections lasting longer than 4 hours, liver failure, kidney failure, stroke etc.
Who are we to make it illegal to use a drug like this to help others ?
I think the problem is society has a problem with smoking a drug.. we have been constantly bombarded with how bad smoking is when it comes to cigarettes with 104 cancer causing chemicals in them.. so how can smoking anything be good for you.. sorry but our society wants you to suffer even though a drug that will help you exists…..
I say ban all chocolate bars with peanuts at all civic venues.
PVal sounds like an experts expert, will have to go with that I guess. Hope you use certified organic.
Dont use the stuff anymore , used to partake many years ago but have to good of a life to even think of ruining it with any charges related to the drug as its illegal…. right now. 8)
