Power Outages in Wake of Storm
Friday, August 23, 2013 @ 10:31 PM
Prince George, B.C. – BC Hydro figures it will be about 1:00 in the morning before power is fully restored to four areas of Prince George.
In all, about 200 customers are without power in the west end of North Nechako Road, Cranbrook Hill, 18th and Johnson, and 5th and Nicholson areas.
The power was knocked out when a powerful thunderstorm raged through the city shortly after 8:00 this evening.

Is it just me or are the summer storms getting more intense than ever before?
I think mother nature is sending us louder messages lately, climate change is here and it’s going to get more extreme.
Yes, I think they are worse….they seem to last a long time when they come and this summer there have been more than I have ever seen here!
as a long time reader of polular science i cn tell you this ‘extremity’ of weather was predicted at least 25 years ago, and those predictions also said this is just the beginning of what is to come. drought is the real issue forthcoming. with drought comes fire. high winds are something i don’t see anyone preparing for. do you really think your stick frame houses are going to stand up to 250 kmh winds? get with the program people.
not sure where my letters went, but sub this where applicable…
“popular science reader i can tell you”
I work outside and this was one of the most phenominal storms in a long time,,heck we left the lunchroom at 8 just to witness the lightshow…absolutely spectacular. Wish I had my camera. I hope some storm watchers got some great photos.
The weather has changed since we lost all the trees to beetle kill. A lot more wind as well.
Just my opinion :)
Lol this isn’t new and it isn’t getting worse. Just another awesome stormy night.
Short memories. I remember lots of summers when we have really good thunder storms. And as for wind, I remember back in the fifties, windstorms tearing roofs off of buildings along Queensway.
I don’t think man has much to do with natural cycles lining up to produce climate change. Man wasn’t even around when CO2 was in much higher concentrations than it is now.
Yes short memories, and believing anything out of popular science about AGW is a mistake. Last night was weather and nothing different. If that storm had missed pg there would have been no comments.
Amen, Seamutt
People#1: “Is it just me or are the summer storms getting more intense than ever before?”
No, it is just you that is getting more intense than ever before …. ;-)
Sorry Seamutt, but I have to go with NASA and 98% of the world’s climatologists who agree that Global Warming is here and it is caused by man (anthropogenic).
Not that this reputable space agency, who has put man on the moon, and all those university educated experts have any credibility compared to you. ;-)
98% of worlds climatologists? Is that a number you decided to pull out of thin air? And the other 2% ? How many climatologists are you following? Come on man back the stats up!!
Seamutt is right. If the storm by passed us last night no one would be talking about it!! By the way I was on the road and yesterday an witnessed this storm come in from a high vantage point and it was a pretty small localized system. Nothing out of the ordinary if you have lived in this area for any length of time.
Sorry People#1 you have to catch up. There has been no warming for 17 years now despite C02 rise, the computer models didn’t see that coming. All predictions of AGW are from computer models and in real world observations not one prediction has come true. Hey Gore has made over 300 million promoting this scam and his hedge funds are in so called green energy and such. Suzuki lives in an 8 million house, not bad.
The UN predicted 50 million sealevel refuges by 2012, didn’t happen and they quietly removed it from their website.
Hey did you know during the last Antarctic winter the south pole recorded its lowest temp. since recording started. Didn’t see that in the warmest liberal media did ya.
For the last 2500 years temperatures have been trending down.
Do you know what PDO,AMO,AO El Nino and El Nina stand for. Warmists tend to ignore those because they are very inconvenient for them.
Oh by the way mans contribution to C02 is only about 3%, interesting how that miniscule amount is supposed to end us.
Read this about your 98%/97%, you been had
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/06/01/tol-statistically-deconstructs-the-97-consensus/
Oops… That would be 97% of the world’s climatologists agree that there is global warming.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/01/19/eco.globalwarmingsurvey/index.html
This is only one of many sources northman, but does it really matter when you and seamutt will discredit any source that disagrees with your global warming denial assertions?
@ britshcolumbian, good for you for being a long time reader of popular science! Good for you that you read, it’s puts you in that “informed” place, and believe me when I say we need more informed, knowledgeable, and independent thinking people in our blindly believing and following sheeple society.
When NASA and 97% of the world’s climatologist agree global warming is occurring and that it is anthropogenic (human related activity caused) they all point their fingers at carbon emitting fuels as the main culprit!
No one should be surprised that is BIG OIL that leads the charge when it comes to global warming denial. The science is as much behind the fact that there is global warming and it’s main driver is the consumption of BIG OIL products, as science was behind the fact that tobacco smoke causes lung cancer. But that science never stopped the tobacco industry from hiring their own bought and paid for scientists to deny a link between the use of their product and cancer.
Tobacco industry denial in the 70’s, BIG OIL denial in the 80’s and 90’s Seamutt and northman are leftover relics from that era when the existence of global warming was debated. We are now in a different decade and century… and predictions of global warming made 30 year ago have come true, global warming is here, and it is only just beginning to make it’s presence felt.
Extreme weather events like the Alberta flooding that went right up to BIG OIL’s doors in Calgary… yet to propagate their own existence, BIG OIL still denies there is global warming and it’s cause is by our consumption of their products!!! END OF DISCUSSION!!!
Please go to the Friday free for all discussion thread find the link I posted to the documentary and watch it, time to wake up sheeple!
The climate was changing long before the first internal combustion engine sputtered to life. 100 years of weather data means squat.
As for storms, yes, people do have very short memories.
“Extreme weather events like the Alberta flooding”
Yeah, actually that is probably more like:
– clear cutting or other removal of natural vegetative systems that absorb rain water such as surface mining, and paving/concreting surfaces, road building
– people building homes in low areas made the result of the flooding much worse
The rainstorms that flooded South Eastern B.C. and Southern Alberta were an extreme weather event to be sure, but mankind has been experiencing such phenomenon for all of recorded history. There is a reason why someone came up with terms like “100 year flood plain” It happens, from time to time.
metalman.
People#1 those predictions have been made since the beginning of scam artists. I got a free role of tin foil for ya.
People#1 here is some more reading for you
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_predictions
@ Seamutt, you are going to need more than one roll of tin foil to hand out to all the scientists at NASA and 97% of the world’s climatologists.
http://c1planetsavecom.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/files/2012/07/global-warming-deniers-climate-science-500×350.gif
The existence of global warming is supported by science, why else would Harper fire so many scientists?
@ Metalman your list of causes of the Alberta flooding are peripheral at best. Most of us know that excessive rain was the primary cause of the flooding (common sense dictates this).
Here let me help you understand:
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/Alberta+floods+Firehose+moisture+caused+floods+Calgary/8561123/story.html
Debating with global warming deniers just gets easier and easier as this planet lurches from one extreme weather event to the next. “Storm of the century” on the east coast of the US, “100 year flood in Alberta” more and more 100 year weather events are occurring… get use to this “people”. It’s the “new normal”.
People#1 getting your facts from main stream media is a big mistake. They make money off doom and gloom not facts. Here is a read on how climate science has been corrupted, I hope you read it.
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/08/25/fabricating-climate-doom-part-3-extreme-weather-extinctions-enron-style/#more-92343
People#1 your examples, one is a cartoon the other references weather not climate, not impressed with your proof. You really must read my reference above. At one time I believed the AGW thing until I realized the caterwalling just did not make sense.
National and international science academies and scientific societies have assessed current scientific opinion on climate change. These assessments are generally consistent with the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), summarized below:
Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as evidenced by increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, the widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level.[5]
Most of the global warming since the mid-20th century is very likely due to human activities.[6]
“Benefits and costs of climate change for [human] society will vary widely by location and scale.[7] Some of the effects in temperate and polar regions will be positive and others elsewhere will be negative.[7] Overall, net effects are more likely to be strongly negative with larger or more rapid warming.”[7]
“[…] the range of published evidence indicates that the net damage costs of climate change are likely to be significant and to increase over time”[8]
“The resilience of many ecosystems is likely to be exceeded this century by an unprecedented combination of climate change, associated disturbances (e.g. flooding, drought, wildfire, insects, ocean acidification) and other global change drivers (e.g. land-use change, pollution, fragmentation of natural systems, over-exploitation of resources)”[9]
No scientific body of national or international standing maintains a formal opinion dissenting from any of these main points; the last was the American Association of Petroleum Geologists,[10] which in 2007[11] updated its 1999 statement rejecting the likelihood of human influence on recent climate with its current non-committal position.[12] Some other organizations, primarily those focusing on geology, also hold non-committal positions.”
In 2007, even BIG OIL gave up on refuting the main points of Global Warming, perhaps seamutt should follow the American Association of Petroleum Geologists lead, stop denying global warming exists and simply take a non-comittal position.
Instead, seamutt chooses to believe as “gospel” the rantings of an ex-weatherman’s blog named “wattsupwiththat.com”. Apparently the old adage remains
true; garbage in – garbage out!
There are a few million people out there that believe there was another shooter on a grassy knoll when JFK was assassinated, are you one of them too seamutt?
People old information you keep rehashing. Can you refute the posters on Watts site? Nobody else has except call him school yard names. Did you know Watts powers his house with solar and has an electric car. Can you match that? Even the IPPC is questioning the lack of warming for the last 17 years.
People how did the earth survive previous periods of much warmer temps. You really have to catch up.
Hey everyone, this is from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Click on “Figure 2. Temperatures Worldwide”.
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/indicators/weather-climate/temperature.html
“Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it.” – George R.R. Martin, A game of Thrones.
Don’t know much about the EPA do you.
People so you believe everything from government do ya.
About EPA. http://icecap.us/index.php/go/political-climate/its_time_to_restore_epas_original_purpose/
“Hey everyone, this is from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Click on “Figure 2. Temperatures Worldwide”.
Wow. 100 years of data. Where’s the 4 billion year chart?
“Where is the 4 billion year chart?” Umm… JB… the first alcohol thermometer was invented in 1709 and the first mercury thermometer in 1714. Before that measuring temperature was guess work. Given these facts, 100 years of collecting global temperature data is exceptional.
seamutt, I would rather believe NASA scientists and 97% of the worlds climate scientists that Anthropogenic Global Warming exists and is here, than some quack on a small city online news blog thinking some kind of global government conspiracy is taking place!
At this late hour I believe it’s time for you and JB to put on your tinfoil hats, take your meds and return to your padded cells (oops I meant bedrooms)… goodnight.
People I see you have not read any of my posts, sad. Now its you have resorted to name calling which is typical of warmists when they realise they are in a corner.
Have you ever heard of the urban heat island effect or the poor siting of weather stations?
Tell me just what is the worlds temperature supposed to be?
So sad you refuse to look at the facts. Oh continue with your schoolers namecalling.
Oh you really should read my link about the real story about the so called 97% of climate scientist.
Umm.. I think you missed my point seamutt. Here let me help you connect the dots:
Delusion: an idiosyncratic belief or impression that is firmly maintained despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality or rational argument, typically a symptom of mental disorder.
Do you get my reference to taking meds and a padded cell now?
People: “Umm… JB… the first alcohol thermometer was invented in 1709 and the first mercury thermometer in 1714. Before that measuring temperature was guess work. Given these facts, 100 years of collecting global temperature data is exceptional.”
A thousand pardons! 300 years of data. How old is the earth?
Go ahead, continue with your personal attacks. That’s what the climate alarmists tend to do.
People just the facts, you have a problem with that?
I know you have not read information in any of my posts as you have not refuted any except for namecalling.
You should read this piece from an official reviewer in the IPCC. Read it along with the comments and you will see how you have been sucked in. Hey I was a follower of the belief at one time.
Oops here is the link. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/08/26/sticking-it-to-the-mann/#more-92412
seamutt states; “People just the facts, you have a problem with that?” .. then makes immediate reference to a “conspiracy theorist” website.
Sigh…
seamutt states; “Hey I was a follower of the belief at one time.” I think most of us know that science is not a belief!
Sigh…
I will let George R.R. Martin have the last word; “Most men would rather DENY a hard truth than face it.”
“conspiracy theorist” website ya okay the most read climate website. I guess you are dug in, so sad.
So would be interesting to know what you think of Gore and his hundreds of millions, temps. flat for 17 years even the IPCC has taken note of that. C02 and temps have been higher in past. Oh well follow your religion.

BIG OIL Exxon – Mobile is still busy denying Anthropogenic Global Warming I see :D LOL
