Salvation Army’s Back Pack Program Gets Cash Boost from Local Family

Thursday, August 29, 2013 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Today from 10 – 2 this afternoon, the Salvation Army in Prince George, will   be into it’s first round of back to school back pack distribution.

It is an annual program that outfits students with basic school supplies from paper to pencils and pens, all packed up in a back pack.

There will be something extra for those families that have pre-registered for this service. Because of a significant cash donation from the Cameron Thun family, each child will be receiving a Wal-Mart gift card. “The gift cards will range from $50 – $75 dollars, depending on the individual’s needs” says Bill Glasgow, Business Coordinator for the Salvation Army.

The Thun family donated $10,000.00 to the back pack program.

“Having a daughter in her 2nd year of college we know of the high cost of school supplies” said  Cameron Thun. His family also grants bursaries to local high schools.

Thun says he is proud to be living in Prince George, and this donation is an effort to “give something back to our community.”

“We are so grateful for this family’s  generosity” says   Glasgow.

With about 145 registered students expected to pick up a back pack today,   Glasgow says it is possible some families needing assistance missed the opportunity to register for the program. “We normally service about 175 to 200 families through this program, so we will be holding a second registration on Tuesday, September 3rd from 9:30 – 2:00 to make sure those families needing assistance but who may have missed the chance to register the first time, can sign up to get the help they need.”
