Fatal Crash Closes 97 North of Quesnel
Priince George, B.C.- There has been a fatal vehicle crash on Highway 97 near Hush Lake.
RCMP say around 3:40 this afternoon , a northbound car crossed the centre line and collided head on with a south bound semi tractor trailer.
Both vehicles caught fire, and as a result of the flames, the tree line also caught fire. Ministry of Forests fire crews are trying to put out the flames and a chopper has been called in to drop buckets of water on the blaze.
The Highway is closed through this area, and there is no word on when it may reopen. There is no known detour.
Also, it is not known how many people might have been in the car, but the RCMP say whoever was in the car, is deceased.
The driver of the semi was not physically injured.
At this point there is no word on possible causal factors for this fatal crash.

Tragic, sympathies to families involved.
THere is a detour, the old cariboo hwy leaves 97 right near the old drive in on the north end of quesnel and delivers you back to 97 just south of hixon. It’s a nice drive…
This is happening way to often.
Makes you wonder about cell phone use….mmmmm.
Here I go again, but it just seems to me that there are a significant percentage of these hitting semi trailers. I wonder if ICBC has the types of collisions categorized to see if that is simply a perception of mine or whether there is some truth in that observation.
Search something like:
1. 2 lane highway
2. head on collision
3. vehicle type involved.
4. frequency of collisions over last 10 years
5. type of injuries
Gus,
Just so you know this one was head on. From what I saw on BCTV that truck was almost in the ditch.
I doubt ICBC tracks anything like this at all. ICBC seems to be consumed with directing law enforcement to target two things. Speed and seat belts, anything else is ignored. Speed and seat belts are very easy to collect the tax on all the other laws apparently not so much.
They may or may not track collisions but I really doubt they track why those collisions happened.
Anyway RIP to the deceased and I would really like Dragonmaster to chime in here as he’s in that industry but I don’t know if he’s working west or south.
What a horrible tragedy, condolences to the families involved.
I have to wonder if this was a bad pass because of a bad driver? I have lost track of the number of drivers I’ve come across that do 70-80 until they hit a passing lane, at which point they speed up to 120. I’ve seen too many close calls with people trying to pass because someone either can’t figure out cruise control, is scared of corners and hills, or is just completely oblivious to everything around them. Those are the drivers the police should be focusing on, IMO.
Or it could have just been a case of cell phone distraction, have seen a lot of that too. Almost called the police on a couple of them because I thought they were drunk until I saw the phone.
maybe doozed off
