Police Patrolling School Zones
Prince George, B.C. – This is it, the big day when School District 57 students head back to class. Consider yourself warned, as Prince George RCMP are making it clear they will be making sure you don’t speed through school zones.
"Police will be out conducting enforcement duties in school zones throughout Prince George and surrounding communities" says Sgt. Al Steinhauser, in charge of the Prince George RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Services Section. "Police have an obligation to protect our children on their way to and from school."
So, even though we have already run a story reminding you of the rules, just for the record, here they are again:
School Zones
School Zones will be in effect from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on all school days and the speed limit for School Zones is 30 km/h, unless otherwise posted. Fines for disobeying the speed limit begin at $196 and go up from there.
School Buses
Every year the Prince George RCMP receive reports of vehicles that narrowly miss hitting a child near a school bus. Police would like to remind drivers to be aware of school buses on the roads again and be on the lookout for flashing lights. According to Provincial law, it is prohibited to (pass) a school bus that is displaying red alternating lights. Drivers in both directions must stop and wait for the bus driver to load or offload children AND disengage the signal lights, before proceeding. Only at that time do you know that all the children are safe. The fine for Failing to Stop for a School Bus is $167. School bus drivers are aware that you are being patient and often give drivers the opportunity to pass when it is safe to do so.
School Guard or School Patrol
There are a number of schools in the Prince George area that employ school crossing guards along some of the busiest roads in the City. Be on the lookout for these safety guards and be sure to stop for them when requested, that is the law in BC. The fine for Failing to Obey a School Guard or School Patrol is $167.
Comments
$167 is not high enough when it comes to children.
agreed, or crosswalks, people in this town are terrible for not stopping, I pick my kids up at PGSS then go down to massey by masich and drivers make the high schoolers dodge traffic, lots of times one vehicles stops and another blows thru causing the pedestrian to stop mid cross, bigger fines needed. the pedestrian loses everytime in a person vs vehicle collision.
I didn’t see one cop. Wow the media does not now what they are talking about. There should be cops at every school for those parents that disregard the speed limit.
The Children who have to walk 20th need protection , not from drivers but the crap thats around them ,walking the sidewalks and on the sidewalks. The taxpayer Apt. building on 20th should be opening soon ,is it going to be a safe place for CHILDREN to live?? We are going to be the landlords I want it to be a safe place how about you?? I want the area in general to be a safe place, I do not want the Needle Van delivering there , I do not want drug addicts in my building. I do not want my building to turn into the Homeland Inn. We have to much invested, How much do we have invested in this Apt.??
