Friday Free for All – Sept. 6th, 2012

Friday, September 6, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

Wow, September is off to a gorgeous start, with sun filled days and cool nights.

Still, there may be something that has made you hot under the collar this week.

It is time to speak up, because  it’s time for the FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL.

You pick the topic, but as always,  obey the three  simple rules:

Keep it Clean

Keep it Legal

No Bullying.

In the bank the other day there was a little sign at the counter that said the government is planning on eliminating cheques. The teller had no details, wondering if anyone on here knows more about it.
Also Costco gas bar which is opening soon, will only accept debit cards and their credit card (Amex or MC?) – no cash.

A little upset to learn earlier this week that the Harper Government is committing 100 million dollars to help Enbridge lay the ground work mapping for transporting dill-bit oil through Kitimat’s hecate straight.

The Joint Review Panel (JRP) hasn’t even come to a decision yet and he is using our tax dollars to fund Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project mapping work.

http://www.vancouverobserver.com/news/elizabeth-may-shocked-latest-revelation-about-harper-government-and-enbridge

Disgusting!!!

So a friend of ours lives at Ness Lake and gets a card for the dump for 50 free dumps. I live in city limits but I dont have regular garbage pick up in my area, however they will not give me a free pass to the dump. I am kinda annoyed. Anyone else have this issue?

Never seen any Costco gas accept cash at pumps. All other places only accepted credit cars. We are the first to accept debit.. yaaaaaaaa That’s good

I noticed that the Harper Gov has decided not to listen to what Enbridge says is an acceptable option for the Northern gateway pipeline. Instead they have commissioned their own report on the waterways in the Kitimat and Hecate Strait Region. (I couldn’t find any reference to “Kitimat’s hecate straight”??)

I would worry a bit more about the taxpayer dollars being wasted on progressive’s education, as slogan chanting seems to have supplanted grammar.

loves seeing the police pulling speeders over in front of spruces and elementary yesterday. I couldn’t believe how many people he ticketed in a very short time! slow down people!

Wife had to go in to get a BC Health Card renewal with the picture for ID. We will all have to do this apparently. She said she arrived at the BC Access Center at 9am and it took 4-hours for her number to come up. Two people working seven stalls when they know the work load will be above average with the new change over on the drivers licenses and BC Health Care cards seems under staffed to me… to bad we don’t have it like the airlines and we could get compensation for time wasted waiting in extended wait lines.

So I’m thinking a person needs to plan to take the day off work to get the card renewal work done.

I would like to point out that it looks like Obama acknowledged the advice he got on the last Friday Free For All and made the right choice bringing the Syria debate to Congress. Made things very interesting and healthy for democracy.

Fukushima is a mess folks! No need to worry about Northern Gateway Pipeline.

Seen a few moms on cell phones the other day driving their little ones to school. Disgusting!

Before I forget I have a prediction. The new Northwood Pulpmill Road fix up I see has a fire hydrant built basically right out of the road side pavement inside the road shoulder. I’ve never seen one located like that on a road that will need to be plowed in the winter. I’ll bet the costs will be huge when the fire hydrant gets taken out by the plow in minus 20.

I can’t figure out why they couldn’t just build a small out from the road to locate the fire hydrant on… somewhere in which it would be clear from the road plows in the winter. I thought they had a standard distance for locating fire hydrants, so this must be an engineers allowance for this one?

Will watch for this when the snow flies.

BBC had photo’s of Fukushima coast with the sea water boiling just off the shore from the plant. They figure there is no way it is coming from the storage water because the reading were higher than the storage water in the tanks… thus the missing fuel the has melted its way underneath the plant is reacting with the water table. It could be the start of making the whole site unworkable for humans and thus the whole plant and its fuel is at risk of further meltdown as the area around the plant becomes uninhabitable.

Worse yet most recent data shows the radiation plum from the initial disaster… rather than dissipating as it crosses the Pacific, is instead concentrating as it gets closer to the North American coast expected to arrive in early 2014.

Eagleone – in regards to the fire hydrant, that’s considered job security for the people who installed it. They’re thinking ahead and ensuring that they will have some overtime this winter.

anyone notice the date posted….. lol…..have a great weekend everyone

Further to my comments on another thread yesterday on out of town slum lords in the city.

A higher property tax rate for those whose primary residence is not in the city would indeed raise the cost of ownership for out of town rental owners, and it would be akin to a higher interest rate and thus a lower market value on their property… but it would also ensure a greater home affordability for people that chose to buy and live in Prince George, those who choose to buy to live in, rather than just speculate on realestate… the ones with an interest in building communities.

Furthermore the value of being a local investor in the local economy would increase with the discount on market value increasing competitiveness for locals as opposed to foreign investors.

I couldn’t see a policy like this extending to industrial or commercial property, but rather just the housing property to try and engineer more local ownership of our neighborhoods through property tax rates.

Little moma on a fixed income shouldn’t be subsidizing the salaries for city services such as police and fire for the Vancouver based slum lord owned crack house causing a blight on the neighborhood and a huge use of resources. If a retired couple has a rental house in the city good for them they get the same tax rate as the rest of the locals. If one moves away from the city the real value of their property drops by a few percent as they absorb a higher tax rate until they sell locally.

Just an hypothetical idea. An idea Vancouver should have implemented 20-years ago and most cities should have something similar IMO.

Banner – apparently the cheque thing is in regards to government-issued cheques. They want everyone on direct deposit by 2016.

Banner, the government is going to eliminate their mailing out cheques for CPP, OAP, EI, etc. after 2016, and those payments will all be made electronically by direct deposit only.

They are already pushing businesses to remit any payments owed the government the same way. All larger businesses already have to remit their employee deductions, corporate income tax, etc., that way, and it likely won’t be too far into the future before small businesses do too.

So in future any individual receiving any payment from the government will have to have a bank account. Which, in the vast majority of instances, the banks now charge you to keep.

To me this seems somewhat akin to a business making a separate charge on your bill for the bill itself. As if you had any choice as to whether you want one or not after they’ve sold you something, or done something for you.

Makes you wonder what’s next, a restaurant, say, dinging you to just look at the menu? A bank fee for just coming through the door of one of their branches?

Eagleone…..that’s because the rest all took a sick day…

Never seen any Costco gas accept cash at pumps. All other places only accepted credit cars. We are the first the first.”

Costco gas bar in Courtney B.C. definitely took debit from us in July when we were there. They were also about 12 cents cheaper than other gas stations in the area. I feel bad for the Mohawk next door to Costco, where I generally fill up, because they are about to lose my business, unless they can compete with what Costco offers.

A huge thanks to Northern Joe for bringing up the route that runs between Quesnel and Hixon. My niece and nephew-in-law were stuck in Quesnel behind that accident last week. After reading his post on my smart phone about the other route, my brother-in-law and I set out in his pickup to go and get the kids and escort them back to the city. The road was paved most of the way and like he said, was a pretty nice drive.

Yup, that fire hydrant looks like an accident–waiting to happen. I have seen a fire hydrant blow it’s top-not pretty.
Even worse if it’s a roadway with big trucks & -20C!!

Just heard on the news support staff bargaining for school districts continues today and no strike date has been set or even served; it seems Ms. Wrong knows how to get the members in SD57 worried over nothing. As for the city workers taking a strike vote? Any news on it?

Question to alexvega and axman; Why would Harpercrite spend 100 million dollars of our tax dollars mapping the the treacherous Hecate Strait when the JRP has not yet ruled in favour or against the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline?

Answer: It doesn’t matter what the JRP rules, if they rule against the proposed pipeline, Harpercrite and his Gestapo will overrule the JRP anyway.

What a public joke the JRP has become, no wonder a number of First Nations and Tribal Councils, like the CSTC, decided not to participate in the JRP sham!

Just wait for the JRP recommendations, then our First Nations can take the Harpercrite Government to court and tie up the process until the next election, when we can vote in a non-BIG OIL Government!

home depot’s got their snowblowers out, lawn mowers are off the floor. after last winter, I’m buying my first snowblower and can’t wait for the snow to fly! any advice on this board, don’t want to spend more than about 800 dollars. any one here use a single stage successfully in pg?

also, weekend! think I might head out to the ancient forest and check out the new boardwalk. if you haven’t been out there, it won’t get much better than this weekend.

woodwoman wrote “it seems Ms. Wrong knows how to get the members in SD57 worried over nothing”
Every morsel of the pile of bs she laid out was lapped up by ppl#1. Doubt if she even thought that it being a contract year that the union would compile the salary of every part time, casual and on call worker to bring the average salary down to 24 grand.
Ppl#1 runs with it, all of a sudden those workers are all single moms all likely named Bobbie Cratchit with at least one kid at home named Timmie struggling to get by on that pittance. Her solution is to turn all the part time jobs into full time positions so if two TAs are needed in the morning but not in the afternoon I suppose they could spend the time after lunch crocheting dollies for all the desks. There are logistical reasons why some of these positions are not full time.

Good grief! Godwin’s Law and it was only 8:45am.

People #1: Why do left-wingers place “people” somewhere in their monikers? Whether it is “People’s Republic of Korea or China, it is all very tongue-in-cheek, if you know what I mean.

I’m am pleased to see you have learned the difference between “straight” and a strait. I blame the placard holder, not you.

Oh and by the way, it is normal practice for any sovereign nation to map its own waterways, no-matter how you try and spin-it. I guarantee it will be happy grad-students doing the work before they line up to be NDP footsoldiers, further adding to the irony.

Pearl Harbour
not actually an Act of War

Just a limited air strike
with no boots on the ground.

My buddy told me he went to Home Depot to buy a snowblower. He talked to three different clerks. Threw up his hands and then went to Northern Hardware and bought one. Just sayin’.

Nice attempt at deflection alexvega, comment about my moniker, superficial comment about spelling, nothing of real substance about the topic at hand.

Point still being; 100 million of our tax dollars is being spent to assist Enbridge map the treacherous Hecate Strait to further their proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline project.

No big surprise here, BIG OIL not only getting billions of dollars in tax breaks, but now spending the taxpayers money for work they should be doing. Our federal government directly funding Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline work, before a JRP decision is made on whether the proposed pipeline should be approved.

Hey this is just like a Russian election… I predict Putin will win!!! Anyone else care to make a prediction? LOL

Have a good weekend everyone! :D

*holds nose* Ok! I’m jumping in!!

“… when we can vote in a non-BIG OIL Government!”

Riiiiight…seems someone needs to understand how our global economy and political system actually works. See, there are these things called jobs. Corporat-ions and small businesses provide jobs. Then there are these two-legged critters called humans that seek jobs so they can do things like eat. That takes money. Government has humans too. They’re called politicians and bureaucrats. Now these people are in charge of keeping the humans – that’s me and you – happy with jobs. Trouble is most can’t even agree on what to have for dinner let alone how to go about keeping ~40 million people appeased.
Big oil will always lobby government. Any interest group will always lobby government. All of us have a stake in the government revenue pie. That’s what community is about. So it really is pointless to play the blame game on any given political stripe since regardless of which ideology won the election, our national family still consists of roughly 40 million – all wanting to eat, play, and do meaningful work.

Have a safe and fabulous weekend!

MikMak…. look on kigi under outdors.. Seen nice snowblower there

Loving this weather.. Hating all who text or talk on cell when driving.

“Point still being; 100 million of our tax dollars is being spent to assist Enbridge map the treacherous Hecate Strait to further their proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline project.”

The reality of the situation is this; we need the money that Enbridge and their ilk will leave behind in our country. I for one sleep better knowing that we’re doing the mapping and not the proponents.

I’m all for putting people first but we can’t really do that when the money tree has no leaves.

I was coming down the Hart the other day and we were following a police car. I got so bored with driving the speed limit that I started checking my Facebook page on my phone ;)

Have a great weekend folks!

95% of CUPE voting members voted to reject the City’s offer, and there’s no indication that today’s strike vote will be any different.

Administration will take it to Council before a strike actually happens, so don’t expect interruption in service, this is just part of the game.

Axman: “I for one sleep better knowing that we’re doing the mapping and not the proponents.”

I totally agree with that.

It is our country, our province. We need to know the information about our property and be in control of that.

So, with that in mind, I do not see the money to map and the responsibility to map going to Enbridge.

Does anyone know for sure how this project is going to be conducted, who is the contractor and who does the contractor report to.

If it is Enbridge and we can save some dollars for project management, I would want government oversight.

Perhaps someone could explain to me why the Major Oil Companies that presently produce the crude oil in Alberta and sell it to the USA at a low cost, and then refine it in Houston Texas, and make a killing on the sale of gasoline would, then build a pipeline to Kitimat,, and export this crude oil to China, so that the Chinese can refine it and make a killing on selling the gasoline??

The Chinese might pay more for the crude, however the Americans will lose the cheap crude that they presently refine??

Who makes the decision where this crude oil goes once its loaded on a ship??? I would suggest that the Oil Companies, that produce the crude will make that decision, and if I were a betting man I would bet that the crude from Alberta, to Kitimat, will go to the refineries in California, not to China.

Have a nice day.

“100 million of our tax dollars is being spent to assist Enbridge map …..”

The province maps its forests for inventory. It is the base from which decisions about land use, AACs etc can be made.

Such base mapping needs to be in the hands of the people who own the land. The licensees do not own the land. We do.

Enbridge does not own the land, we do. We want to make sure that when the users of our land do work on it, that we both have the best information possible.

I would not trust Enbridge or other contractors. It is the standard practice as well as the best practice.

http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hts/inventory.htm

Go away Enbridge!!!

People 1, chill out dude your fuming is only going to add to globull warming.

It is the federal governments responsibility for marine navigation. Don’t forget there will also be LNG tankers. Under your reasoning I guess truckers should be paying the full cost of roads. Anyhow ships have been navigating in and out of Kitimat for decades with no issues. Now with the updated navigation and radar should be much safer. You really shouldn’t be putting much credit in anything Weaver or May have to say.

I have traveled all those waters many times and with the proper procedures no real issue. I have seen the area very wild and rough and also as smooth as a billiard table.

So what do you think of the northwest passage freezing up early and messing up the rowers, jet skiers and yachters plans. 22 vessels trapped in the ice. I guess they where expecting palm trees.

Greenies get upset thinking Harper is taking away environmental oversight and get upset when he applies oversight, hey make up your minds.

My, my… all these comments peripheral to the main issue being; Hapercrite investing 100 million dollars of tax payer money to support a proposed pipeline project that (supposedly) may not even be approved by the JRP.

Imagine that; gambling 100 million dollars on a project that may not be approved??? Why?? Because Harper knows the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline will be approved regardless of the JRP’s findings!!!

The JRP process was, and is, a complete SHAM… a dog and pony show if you will. But that’s what we get for living in a petro-state.

Harper’s electoral riding is in Calgary, Alberta (BIG OIL Country). BIG OIL backs Harper so Harper must back BIG OIL!!!

Too bad we cannot take Norway’s lead on who to manage our oil industry. Here is a link towards how we should be managing our oil and gas resources properly.

You know folks, regarding Enbridge I truly believe the decision has been made. Enbridge will be laying down this line. Yes it may not be right away but, we are talking about billions and billions of dollars.

I honestly believe that British Columbians should start looking ahead and planning a way to preserve and protect this land. We need to educate ourselves to understand and be able to recognize signs or indicators of potentially damaged piping.

Demand the highest level of inspection and quality. If the pipe goes through your land you should have the ability hire your own inspector to audit the line and bill it back to Enbridge.

I am certainly not for this pipeline but time and time again I have seen our Politian’s drop all respect for democracy in this country and province. They understand only one language, as the saying goes “money talks”.

There is talk about licensing motorized wheelchairs and scooters. In that case more reason applying same to bicycles since they are much faster and right out on the roads. Not much difference between a bicycle and a motorcycle on the road but no licensing or exam required for a bicycle. I have always found that interesting.

Part of the reason stated why our insurance rates are going up is because of more bicycle involved accidents. All the more reason to license and exam since the same road rules apply to all.

You know folks, regarding Enbridge I truly believe the decision has been made. Enbridge will be laying down this line. Yes it may not be right away but, we are talking about billions and billions of dollars.

He’s not “gambling” 100 million people#1. The government is doing its job. Do you even read other posts before you parrot the same tired BS? Join the real world when you grow up.

People#1. I answered your little whine with a perfectly reasoned response. Canada maps its own waterways, not the lease holder who hopes to traverse it.

Tax breaks for big oil. Prove it. That is the most infantile slogan or rant you people repeat ad nauseum. Citation please. Or do you only cite left leaning news sources, when they compliment your scree?

Listen to all the sniveling about a single pipeline crossing the province, while the Peace Country is criss-crossed with tens of thousands of kilometers of pipes, pumps and compressor stations. Pfft..not a peep.

http://www.vancouversun.com/business/2035/industry+seeks+billion+dollar+break+lure+plants/7935459/story.html

alexvega; umm.. I guess it’s not the FOX News type Vancouver Sun, but the Vancouver Province seems like a mainstream news source that points out billion dollar tax breaks for the oil and gas industry. The oil and gas industry is ALWAYS seeking and GETTING billion dollar tax breaks in Canada!

@ only2c;

“Social License will determine whether this proposed pipeline project will go through, Harpercrite and his Gestapo be danged!!!

80% or Northern British Columbians oppose this proposed project and 67% of British Columbians province wide oppose this proposed pipeline. Don’t forget… there is still a 30 year moratorium on gas and oil exploration off our BC Coast for a reason! Now why would we be supporting a moratorium on oil and gas exploration off our pristine coast yet allow oil tanker traffic?

This Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline does NOT have the “social license” to proceed therefore it WILL NOT HAPPEN!!!

80% of Northern BC residents oppose this pipeline? Funny, I don’t remember being asked! I would rather see a pipeline instead of trucks or trains full of oil!
Just my $.02

Hey whats going on? 67% Northern Gateway opposition down to 61% opposition according to this latest poll Feb, 2013.

http://www.abbynews.com/business/189732431.html Titled: Poll shows most against Northern Gateway.

This should not surprise anyone, who wants the “keystone kops” building and operating a pipeline through BC’s pristine wilderness?

Eagleone, that screw on the top or the hydrant is connected to a rod which turns the valve underground 6 to 10 feet below the hydrant. If the hydrant gets clipped no water will shoot out, but they will have to pay for the pipe and probably a new hydrant to fix it.

Just like sprinkler heads in buildings, they don’t all fire at once, only the one that senses excess heat and breaks the glass allows water to spray out. Nothing like the movies unfortunately.

MoWay: less oil spilled in Kalamazoo than at Lac Megantic. Less deaths to humans too. MMA is reported as to not knowing what kind of oil they were transporting. This oil that was in the railcars was turned down by Enbridge to transport in their pipes due to it being too flammable…go figure.

People#1 tax breaks are being asked for not being granted. Read your own link.

People#1: “Imagine that; gambling 100 million dollars on a project that may not be approved??? Why??”

Because if you have ever been to Kitimat lately you will see the construction on the new LNG plants and the expansion of the smelter. These both require tankers and large cargo ships to traverse the Kitimat Arm in the next year or two. And before you go all People#1 on us the Haisla first nation is involved heavily in most these projects so go ask them if they approve.

slinky. Construction of the new LNG Plants??? Just what plants would this be???? Who is constructing them????

The new smelter has been under construction for a few years now, and in fact should be completed in the next two years. Once its up and running it will operate with 400 less full time employee’s and produce the same or more ingots.

Notice there is no mention anywhere about the progress of Kemano Two?? Hmmmmmmmm.

The !100 million mapping of the bottom of Hecate Strait is being done because of the new LNG plant and the smelter expansion?

State your sources slinky, cite your source, or am I the only one to constantly post credible links that support the facts?

Food for thought.

On Sept 23/13 Council will probably decide whether or not to award a contract for Downtown Parking.

If the Ya’s win it will cost us in excess of $1.6 Million, and cause all sorts of problems for people working downtown, and for business, that is trying to survive.

If the Na’s win, then we can probably forget about the new system, and continue on with the present system, with a better way of collecting the fines.

Most people in Prince George, along with the DBIA, the Chamber of Commerce, etc; are opposed to paid parking downtown.

WHO’S IN FAVOUR. It appears at this point that the Mayor and probably 3 Councillors, and a few Managers, and administrative people are in favour. So, are these few people going to be able to give us a parking system that we don’t need?? It certainly appears so at this point in time.

We need to watch the vote on this on Sept 23rd very closely and make a mental note of who voted in favour and who voted against. Then at the election in 2014 we can govern ourselves accordingly.

I think that between now and the 23rd there will be a lot of arm twisting going on to ensure that the Mayor gets sufficient votes to push this issue through. Lets hope that people will not be swayed by a short term gain, that will be a long term pain for the downtown.

Councilor Krause will be on holidays so will miss the vote, which is really to bad, because this issue needs all the Councilors on hand. Not likely Krause will change his holidays, and will let the chips fall where they may. This could be construed as an abdication of his responsibilities as a Councilor (in my opinion), however that’s for others to decide.

If the vote is 4 to 4 then the issue is dead, however if it is 4 to 3 then pay parking becomes a reality.

Those people who are concerned about this issue should be talking to the Councilors and expressing their preferences. You can rest assured, that the Mayor, and those in favour of the issue are working the back rooms to try and get sufficient votes.

Perhaps we could leave the Pipeline debate, the LNG debate, and the problems in Syria, for a while and concentrate on some local issues??

Just sayen ;

Never been to Kitimat lately have you?

Shell Canada is building like made, they ferry workers to the site right now because there is no road yet, that too is under construction by 3 bus loads of people from the Haisla Kitimat Village daily. We were there on Saturday and Sunday and the busses and ferry were going strong every shift even on a long weekend.
http://investnorthwestbc.ca/major-projects-and-investment-opportunities/map-view/kitimat/shell-canada-ltd

Once the road is built Haisla and its partners Chevron and Apache will begin construction of the plant
https://www.enewsletters.gov.bc.ca/LNG_in_BC/February_2013/FNCIDA/article

If you run your boat out the Shell plant is past clearing land phase and excavators and other equipment is working like mad. The Haisla site looks like it will be huge compared to the Shell one.

If you drive through Kitimat and to the industrial section you will see what this 3.3 billion dollar modernization project looks like. It will increase output tonnage by 420,000 tonnes annually and reduce emissions by 50%. They estimate there are 2,400 people working on the project as we speak and will result in a total of 1,000 permanent jobs once complete. They were assembling a second crane the day were went for a look see.
http://www.kitimatworksmodernization.com/

Shell Canada is building like mad (not made)…didn’t proof read – try phoning for a hotel room in Kitimat

The Rio Tinto temporary camp is huge. Atco trailers as far as the eye can see

Slinky. The new Alcan Plant is being built to replace the old plant. The new plant will produce approx. the same amount of tonnage, however it will be able to do so, with 400 less workers, and perhaps with less electricity. So there will be a net loss of jobs after the plant is complete.

Don’t confuse the people who work on constructing the plant with the people who actually work in the smelter producing aluminum.

In 2006 it was the intention of building a LNG plant in Kitimat to IMPORT natural gas to Kitimat for distribution to North America, however with the advent of **fracking** etc; there is now a surplus of Natural Gas around the world, and especially in Canada, hence the need to now Export this gas. Originally the imported gas was to be supplied by Australia, Russia (Sakhalin Island), Indonesia and Malaysia. These Countries still have a surplus of gas, so this industry is highly competitive.

How many plants will be built? Who knows?

Most of the hype was brought in for the last Provincial Election, and things will now start to die down.

You are kind of new to this debating thing aren’t you slinky?

I specifically asked you to cite the source of information that supports your claim that the $100 millions being spent on mapping the Hecate Strait is for the LNG and smelter and not the proposed Enbridge Gateway Pipeline!

I don’t care how many sources you state relating to general LNG and smelter activity on the coast. Cite you source of information that supports your claim the the $100 million is for the LNG Industry and not the Oil transportation industry, which the Haisla are totally against!

There is little debate required to counter your spam people#1. The feds are responsible for marine navigation and regulation. The fact they are mapping it for all marine navigation is their responsibility whether its LNG, oil, aluminum, logs, containers, fish, wheat and hopefully basement dwellers like you.

I am still trying to find out this mapping thing People#1 is talking about. Model does not mean map, our waterways have been “mapped” eons ago.

The feds have commissioned a study on ways to improve marine weather forecasting in Northern BC through Environment Canada. This is linked to Enbridge because Elizabeth May says it is? LNG tankers and cargo ships will need weather info don’t you think? Along with fishermen, we watched the weather reports closely while fishing the Kitimat Arm and Hartley Bay areas.

During the hearings for NGP the Greens argued that effects of bitumen on marine environments haven’t even been adequately studied in Canada. Environment Canada is going to study it through funding from the Feds… Now she says this is Enbridges job? Highly doubt that, diluted bitumen will also be shipped from Vancouver if it already hasn’t and the Feds need to know how to deal with it in salt water situations – if it is any different from crude, etc. This is all called doing your due diligence

Hey.. finally… an admission from two sources that the work will benefit the transport of Bitumen, now if we have the Haisla read this discussion forum, maybe they can lower the boom because they are opposed to any form of transporting bitumen in their traditional territory!!!

Thanks guys, have a good weekend.

Palopu, don’t confuse 7 year old news with what is happening now. Shell is building a LNG plant right as we speak in the Kitimat Arm.

You are crying about the news release the CAW2301 union had about the smelter in May of 2012 where they estimated the smelter would employ 699 people in the future, or 500 less than in 2007. He (Rick Belmont) also said to Kitimat city council “they said they would build a new smelter, do you see a new smelter out there?” What a year and a half brings along with that 1,500 man ATCO camp is something to behold.

Same tonnage? In 2011 they produced 168,000 tonnes, once finished they have a 420,000 tonne capacity but they will only produce 168,000 tonnes in Kitimat?

huh? where your mom and dad brother and sister ppl? The work will benefit all marine traffic. what part don’t you get?

People#1 is a confusing piece of work. Better marine weather forecasts and more frequently than twice a day will benefit everyone on the coast. Better knowledge of how bitumen reacts in ocean environments benefits everyone, including Kinder Morgan’s twinning project to Vancouver, don’t see Elizabeth May all up on that one.

Still trying to find info on this mapping thing she was on about

lol…the slinky vs. people#1 show could be the next big hit reality tv program! thanks for the laugh you two!

As a former resident of Kitimat with family still there, Palopu is correct. As exciting as an Atco trailer park is beside an aluminum smelter to behold, it doesn’t deserve the hype some give it, lol. Now, can we get our head out of the clouds and deal with reality? Oops…what am I saying? I moved to PG. Land of pie in sky mentality.

Time to either move or make more popcorn. Hmm… ;-)

LOL commoner, glad to be a source of entertainment for you. Slinky is just stalking me on this forum, no matter what new item I post to, there he follows.

I seem to be attracting a small following of posters on this site… seamutt, slinky, ewitt are among those that have been showing me some attention / affection as of late. Lonesome reaches out to me occasionally as well.

While I am flattered by all their attention, I hope this will soon pass… ;-)

Seriously slinky! Less oil spilled in the Kalmazoo than what burnt up in Quebec? You better research that alittle more to get your facts straight!

Where does PG get its drinking water from? A spill in the Stuart will finish PG! They couldn’t possibly truck in drinking water for 3 years! Three years slinky and they are still trying to clean it up!

Less people killed in Kalamazoo than in Quebec.

Look at how much some people such as People#1 and NoWay do not give a chit about people and are concerned more about oil.

Seems that People#1 is a misnomer if she can’t differentiate between the value of a person and oil.

In the USA in 2012, 474.6 billion gallons of oil were transmitted by pipeline. There were 2.3 million gallons spilled. That is a 0.00048% spill rate.

Ending with 2012, there were 11.2billion gallons of oil transported by rail over the total of the previous 10 years. The rate of spillage was twice as high as by pipeline.

The annual rate of delivery by pipeline is almost 500 times that of delivery by rail.

So, the risk and delivery by rail is twice as high as by pipeline.

Due to the amount of oil delivered by pipeline the total impact of oil spilled by pipeline is greater.
