Controlled Experimental Burns Planned

Tuesday, September 10, 2013 @ 3:52 AM
Vanderhoof, B.C. – Folks living or working near the Carrot Lake Experimental Burn Project southwest of Vanderhoof could see some smoke or flames coming from that site over the next week or so, but there is no need to worry.
Teams will be igniting fires at the Experimental Site about 70 kms south-southwest of Vanderhoof to examine fire behaviour.

Established 9 years ago, the Carrot Lake research site is used to study how fire behaves in stands of trees affected by mountain pine beetle infestations.

There are eleven isolated blocks of lodgepole pine, surrounded by fireguards.

The controlled burns will only take place if the conditions are right and smoke will disperse quickly.

Fireguards have been established around the entire burn site, which will be further protected by sprinkler lines to prevent the fire from expanding beyond the test area.

This burn will be closely monitored from start to finish by highly  trained firefighting crews to ensure that it remains contained and has a  minimal impact on the surrounding area.

I guess its just in time for the perfect conditions for fire. Next four days near 30-degrees, so good time for fire personnel to play with fire? Meanwhile elsewhere….

It will be interesting to see how fire burns through a beetle killed area. Normally in a green forest you have crowning etc, however not likely in a dead forest. However because all the wood is dead and dry, it might burn for months. It could also go under ground and burn for a long time.

I bet that it will be very slow burn. Since the beetles have already sucked all the sugar out of the trees, its not going to burn as fast. It will need fuel propellent to get it going.

Hmm should have done this when the NDP was in power back in the nineties when it could have been contained in Tweedsmiur.

Nature usually controls forest fires. Not sure that humans can match her wonderful work of forest renewal. She has considerably more experience.
