Tour de North Heads Down Highway 97

Prince George, B.C. – The Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North is underway, with 26 riders covering 850 kilometres in seven days.
The bicycle riders include regular RCMP members, civilian members of the force and community riders from Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Burns Lake, Smithers, Mackenzie, Fort St. John and Dawson Creek. The Prince George contingent includes RCMP members Paul Starr and Holly Lavin, civilian member Dustin Hudyma and community rider Dennis Schwabb. They’re taking part in the Tour to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and for the summertime recreational camp for children, Camp Goodtimes. The fundraising goal this year is $290,000, with more than $200,000 pledged so far toward the ride. The recent Jail and Bail event in Prince George raised over $7,000 for children’s cancer research.
The Tour de North kicked off Friday with a send off from Dawson Creek as the riders headed for Fort St. John. Today they travel to Hudson Hope and Chetwynd. Sunday’s leg has the Tour going from Chetwynd to Powder King, Monday is Powder King to Mackenzie, then on Tuesday the Tour passes through Bear Lake an on to Prince George. Wednesday it’s off to Hixon and Quesnel followed by the closing leg, Quesnel to Williams Lake on Thursday.
There is a welcoming event planned on 3rd Avenue at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon when the riders roll into Prince George. As well, the Tour de North Dinner of Courage is being held at 7 Tuesday evening at the Signature Sandman. It includes dinner, music provided by the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, a silent auction and the opportunity to meet the Tour de North team.
