UBCM Calls for More Time on MMBC Matter

Prince George, B.C.- Delegates to the Union of BC Municipalities convention in Vancouver have unanimously endorsed a resolution dealing with the proposed contracts with Multi-Materials BC .
Numerous communities and Regional Districts throughout BC have rejected the financial incentives proposed by MMBC and have refused to enter into a contact with MMBC for recycling of packaging and printed papers. They say the contract is too heavily weighted in MMBC’s favour, the fines are onerous, and the contract would end up having local taxpayers foot the bill for an initiative that is supposed to be covered by the producers of such products.
The deadline for a decision by communities was September 16th, with the new recycling plan to come into effect in May of next year.
The resolution calls for an extra 90 days for “ local governments to properly clarify and consider the Multi-Material BC’s (MMBC) financial incentive and service offer.”
The resolution also calls for a UBCM committee to negotiate the next steps in the process on behalf of its members.
Prince George and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George are among the local governments to reject the contract offer from MMBC.
