Prince George, BC – The annual Run For Diabetes Research goes later this morning in Fort George Park…
The local event is one of 27 runs across the country in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Local organizers point out that there are more than 400-thousand people living in British Columbia with the disease. According to the association, one in four Canadians has diabetes or prediabetes, and, if this trend continues, that will rise to one in three by 2020.
The estimated health care costs associated with diabetes in BC was $1.5-billion dollars. The Association’s Director of Community Giving, Fred DeFina, says money raised from today’s walks will be used to fund cutting-edge research.
Registration for this morning’s walk begins at 8:30am, participants will head out from the bandshell at 10am.
At Masich Place Stadium, friends and family members of the late Lorelei Dale have organized the 2nd annual Team HD Prince George Run For Lor to raise awareness and funds for Huntington Disease.
Dale succumbed to the disease two years ago, when she was just 34-years-old.
The first run last year was organized by her friend, Heather Chalmers, who expected 20 people for the event, but was blown away when more than 60 came out to run. The group raised almost $6000 and has set a similar goal for this year. Participants are invited down to the track to for a 1K or 5K walk or run between 11am and 2pm.
