Gommeringer nets two in final minutes of Spartans win over Timberwolves
PRINCE GEORGE, BC – Krista Gommeringer put away two goals in three minutes to put the No.7 Trinity Western Spartans ahead of the UNBC Timberwolves 4-0 in Canada West women’s soccer action on Friday night. The Spartans move to 2-1-3 while the Timberwolves fall to 0-6-1.
The reigning national champions did not waste anytime getting on the score sheet. Fifth year forward Natalie Boyd(Surrey, BC) started the Spartans scoring off in minute five. Midfield Jessica King (Liverpool, ENG) played through to Boyd who danced around the Timberwolves defence creating enough space to take her shot. Boyd’s goal gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead that would hold until the final play of the first half when Jennifer Castillo (Surrey, BC) fired a high shot over the UNBC keeper. The ball bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net, Colleen Webber (Calgary, AB) was credited with the assist. At half time the Spartans led 2-0.
The Timberwolves were slow to get started and could not seem to find a rhythm. The Spartans stopped every attempt to create scoring opportunities, holding the Timberwolves to just five shots compared to Trinity Western’s 29.
In the second half the Spartans controlled possession and were able to capitalize with two more goals in the final five minutes by second year Krista Gommeringer (Calgary, AB). Gommeringer netted her first of the match in minute 85 off a ball from Jenna Di Nunzio, giving the Spartans a solid 3-0 lead. Shortly after Natalie Boyd kept the ball alive and was able to cross it to Gommeringer who sealed the deal with a long hard shot, past the Timberwolves keeper, straight to the back of the net in minute 88.
Goals by Natalie Boyd, Jennifer Castillo and two from Krista Gommeringer were tallied in the Spartans 4-0 win over the Timberwolves.
The No.7 Trinity Western Spartans host the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba next weekend on October 4-5. The Timberwolves continue their Canada West campaign on Sunday, September 29 when they host the No.4 UBC Thunderbirds.
