Prince George, B.C. – To say the Mennonite Fall Fair holds a great deal of appeal in Prince George would be an understatement.

This year’s fair, held Saturday at the Civic Centre, was very well attended. Diane Fairservice, who astutely took care of some PR chores, says the fair has been running for about 33 years. “We started out at the church and we had to move the venue because it too big so we were in the old civic centre and now we’ve moved in here. The crafts are all made and donated by members of our church community, the baking is made by the same women and we had three carloads of baking come in from a sister church in Vanderhoof. The garage sale is all donated, the produce is all donated, we purchase the farmer sausage and we have perogies come in from Abbotsford each year. But pretty much everything else is donated by members of our church community or people who want to help out.”

Fairservice says “Ninety percent of our proceeds go to MCC, the Mennonite Central Committee. They work in Third World areas around the world and we specifically ask that they use our money for food and clean water projects. So that may be sand dams in Kenya, purchasing goats or rabbits for a family in Lebanon.” She says people can go to www.mcc.org to find out more about those programs. She adds “this is the largest support of MCC that Westwood Mennonite Bretheren Church sponsors. We have approximately 200 people here from our church, as well as friends and family who come to help support that cause.”

At times Saturday the crowd was so large it was difficult to get inside the auditorium and move around. Fairsrvice says people are attracted to the fair each year. “Our doors don’t open till 10, and there will be a line-up forming outside before 9 a.m. most fall fair days.   And there will be people here right to the bitter end when the doors close. There are always lots of bargains to be had, lots of good baking and produce and crafts for people to purchase. We have thousands of people I don’t even know that I could put a number on how many people we have through the doors. But we have a great customer base in the people of Prince George and they come out to support us very well every year.”

She also gave a not-so-subtle plug to “freshly made beef borscht, started at 7:30 this morning!”
