Gas Line Capped

Prince George, B.C. – The natural gas line, that has been leaking since about 7:30 this morning at 9th and Brunswick has been capped.
The line was officially shut off at 11:01. Officials say people can return to the area.
The line was ruptured this morning during construction prep at the site of a new hotel-condo development across from the existing RCMP station.
It took crews a long time to shut down the gas flow because the line is an old one and does not have as many shut off valves as a new installation so a new valve was installed.

UM…..Call before you dig????
It was a distribution line so it would of been in city plans very difficult to move those unlike a feed line to a home which can be moved fairly easily.
Also heard that because it was an older distribution line the shutoff was under the ground and had to be dug up unlike newer shut offs which can be reached from the surface with an extension rod.
I was surprised how long it took to shut off. 3.5 hrs, downtown, in the daytime, easily accessible vs remote area.
Have to remember they were dealing with a volatile gas and even though there were several emergency measures in effect to minimize risk of explosion all it would take is one errant spark and all the safety protocols would not help and you have to remember that this was a distribution line which means high volume and high pressure two very ugly combinations when dealing with gas
