Manila and India… excellent sources of cheap slave labour! Hmm… and the Lib-Cons wonder why the economic boom they keep talking about never comes… hmm…

Good old business, lay-off domestic workers and outsource their jobs to cheap labour foreign countries, then wonder why fewer unemployed people at home can afford their products.

Well played Glacier Media, well played.

It’s not literal slave labour. It is virtual slave labour. Virtual, in that it is very low pay. But then again, low is relative. In those countries, that is (almost) a living wage. In this country of an over zealous and now too strong a labour movement has priced production labour out of the global market place. This is evidenced by the outsourcing of these kind of productions, and the growing reluctance of employers to train in-house, and the growing “foreign worker” programs.

No worries though, china has been quietly acquiring everything in Canada the USA corporate entities have not managed to acquire.

I sure hope that the city does not travel ( at taxpayer’s expense) to check the workforce. Shameful!!!

In other words Loki, we; the domestic labour force, must reduce our wages down to a level that is competitive with third world countries. If we don’t, our businesses and companies will outsource our jobs to that cheaper overseas labour supply.

Hmm… I was getting tired of my; spiffy new vehicle; modern 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, family home; superfluous boat, snowmobile, ATV, etc.

I see the wisdom of your business ways Loki, I will be the first to raise my hand to have my wages cut by more than half, I can do without all that I have listed and I am willing to lower my standard of living to that of third world countries.

Anyone else care to join me?

When will the madness stop?everyone paying their share of taxes (wealthy, corporate and municipal councilor) and a ceiling on corporate salaries would be a good fix. Instead, we continue to stand by and watch all levels of middle class erode. Ah well, let them eat cake

Actually, I was hoping that rather than lower our standard of living, other regions would increase theirs. thereby leveling the playing field.

Of course that is thoughts of folly, because without those other lower living standard regions, we could not have things like walmart and the many, many, many inexpensive disposable consumer products that we all in the first world have come to not only appreciate, but think we need.

My main point in the first post was not that we should lower our standard, but rather the labour movement has exceeded its mandate of “fair wages and work conditions” to pricing our labour out of the global production market.

bcnorth has brought into this discussion valid points in that if the haves contributed as much as they are supposed to instead trying to skirt the law and the CRA, we might be better off economically. The problem is that too much is never enough when it comes to personal wealth. Our very own list of uber wealthy now counts their holdings in billions of dollars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadians_by_net_worth
Who needs billions of dollars in personal wealth? That is just flat out greed.

There a very few wealthy that give back. Bill Gates is one uber wealthy that is giving back through his foundation and his association with:
The Giving Pledge is a campaign to encourage the wealthiest people in the world to make a commitment to give most of their wealth to philanthropic causes. The campaign specifically focuses on billionaires and was made public in 2010 by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. The Huffington Post reported in April 2012 that “81 billionaires committed to giving at least half of their fortunes to charity”.[1] As of July 2013, 113 billionaire individuals and couples and one family group have signed the pledge.[2]

Quite frankly, this story makes me want to toss up my lunch.

I work in the graphic design and media profession and have worked at two PG publications in my past as an ad designer. The wages made in this profession are not great, especially if it’s non-union (which mine were). The union wages for designers hardly break the corporate piggy bank, except maybe those that were in the job for 30-40 years. But those were few and far between.

Good luck trying to get a last minute change done to your ad when the designer is on the other side of the planet. Or getting an ad designed by somebody who understands the local community, for what will work and what won’t.

I hope for my professional colleagues they don’t do the same thing to the PG Citizen.

An interesting comment coming from a person who lives in a province that has the highest child poverty rate in the country 8 out of the last 10 years.

As for your examples about the rich giving back (charity) and spreading their wealth, I acknowledge the examples you provide.

Yet there would also be many examples that show rich people being greedy:

This next one is titled “Who is hiding $32 TRILLION dollars in off-shore tax havens”

I get it Loki only labour has to cut back.

Child poverty does not exist in this country.
It is a misnomer created by the media to sensationalize.
There are children of financially poor families.
Children in this country cannot earn income, therefore they cannot be classed in any economic manner.
It is their parents or guardians or assigned caretakers that are poor.

flame suit on, go.

Very shitty and shamefull. Especially since there are lots of people willing to work.

Loki states; “Child poverty does not exist in this country.
It is a misnomer created by the media to sensationalize.”

http://www.breakingnews.ca/2011/12/06/my-menu/manitoba/shacks-slop-pails-on-wasagamack-first-nation/

We have half a million aboriginals living in third world conditions on Canada’s reserves, and our government perpetuates that poverty by sending more slop pails for them to use as toilets.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2011/04/21/ottawa_gives_reserves_1000_slop_pails_for_water_crisis.html

We are an international embarrassment! But lets all take massive pay cuts so we can compete with third world country labour rates, so we can all get to know, first hand, how our Aboriginal peoples live!

Hey Loki, you a Tea Party candidate? Your a little far North aren’t you?

1st, you contradict yourself. You say the labour movement is too strong, then you say that’s why industrialists moved manufacturing off shore. Well, manufacturing to a large extent was moved off shore and the “labour movement” was largely broken because of that a long time ago. All that’s left are just remnants which I believe will soon be gone as well. If your rubbing your hands together in anticipation of that, you’re not really thinking about the implications that will have on YOUR life too. Not very smart.

So you’re dismissing child poverty as a misnomer too? Good grief, you must just be trolling, because nobody could possibly be that stupid. It’s not about semantics, child poverty is a real thing. Yes, their parents (often just one) are poor, which means the children are poor too. Some of the signs that you’re poor are that you don’t have access to proper nutrition, clothing, housing, healthcare and education. Believe me, many children in this country qualify to be classified as such. Their basic needs for longevity are not being met and that’s just not good enough in a country as rich as this one.

Your bluster is just that – hot air.

Who needs the temporary foreign workers program when they can just outsource our jobs?

Time for the pitchforks and torches yet Canada?
Wonder what it will actually take to see massive civil unrest/disobedience in this country.

Too many sheeple on this rock hey People#1.

Lets shut these scumbag companies down!

This goes along with what CNC is doing. It appears they started an IT Program and 95% of students are from India. Guess where they will go to when they complete the program??? Yesss back home….to await Canadian jobs that will be outsourced to them

Universities and college see foreign student placements very lucrative since they are charged the full non government sponsored tuition. Bet the companies send them to Canada to be trained and then boast they are trained in Canada and should get canadian contracts. Very deceiving bastards.

I got rid of my citizen subscription when hugh Nicholson was in charge. Will boycott any company that out sources jobs to any other country other than Canada. Royal bank tried this and then back pedaled after people complained. they backed off but I still pulled my accounts. So don’t even think about it

Don’t just blame the workers wages, blame the government safety codes, environmental codes, etc. Somewhere CEOs and owners forgot that strong work force makes a strong company.

Blame safety and environmental codes?? For what?? Saving lives? Clean air and water. Ask the folks in India how lack of these regs are working out for them!!

Eventually the “cheap” labour countries will catch up in income respectively.

Its all about the money, some very good comments in the end its people that will drive change. What these companies and Governments have to understand is the workers in these and other sectors are the same people buying the products. Out source the jobs and who buys the products? When you look at the large scale of out sourcing of jobs in the past 15 years its a major problem.

Subscriptions don’t matter to these people. Advertisers do. Pull your ads in protest. Subscription fees pay for the delivery. I won’t be advertising with that company any more.
