Missing Mushroom Pickers Knew Searchers Were Looking for Them

Tuesday, October 8, 2013 @ 5:22 PM
Terrace, B.C. – Two missing mushroom pickers lost in the bush near Terrace for 15 days knew that people were looking for them.

Terrace Search and Rescue Manager Dave Jephson says officials made the discovery when they met with 26 year old Ike Murray Tuesday. Jephson says both Murray and his picking partner, 32 year old Devlin Sabo, were able to see helicopters and knew that searchers were out looking, but were unable to signal or establish contact. Murray was found alive yesterday afternoon by a rail maintenance crew.

Search and rescue crews returned to an area of Fiddler Creek Tuesday after speaking with Murray. Jephson says they’re combing an area approximately 6-10 kilometres west of the Skeena River. While they did turn up some of the men’s belongings, it’s not clear to searchers when they might have been in the area.

Terrace Search and Rescue says the operation is being treated as a missing person investigation, although Jephson says the possibility of a happy ending is looking less likely. Jephson says as time goes on, more will be learned about their travels and their circumstances in the woods.

Earlier today,  Sabo’s mother had posted on Facebook that her son  had died, commenting "Devlin died in Ike’s arms".
