Cougars Fall in Victoria.
Monday afternoon in Victoria, the Prince George Cougars were defeated 3-0 by the Victoria Royals. Logan Nelson had two goals and an assist while Patrik Polivka turned aside all 24 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.
2:32 into the first, Victoria grabbed a 1-0 lead. The Cougars missed an offensive chance in the Royals zone, and back the Royals came on a two-on-one. Brandon Fushimi centered a pass to Logan Nelson who made no mistake for his sixth of the season.
Late in the period, Victoria padded their lead on a power play. Austin Carroll converted off a Branden Magee rebound with only 40 seconds remaining in period one. Brett Zarowny made the first two tough saves before Carroll eventually stuffed it home.
In the second period, the Cougars and Royals each received two power plays, but neither team was able to convert. The second period ended with the same 2-0 score, and the shots were even at 19-19.
The game’s final goal came in the late stages of the third period into an empty net. Once again it was the trio of Brandon Magee, Austin Carroll and Logan Nelson combining for the marker. The Cougars were outshot in the third 32-24.
Cougars goaltender Brett Zarowny started his first game since September 27th and was strong, stopping 29 of the 31 shots he faced.
Victoria went one-for-five on the power play while the Cougars finished zero-for-four.
With the loss, the Cougars record now sits at an even 5-5-0-1. They will practice Tuesday and look to return to the favor against the Royals on Wednesday night.
