Choosing Your Sport For The 2015 Winter Games

Sunday, October 20, 2013 @ 4:04 AM

Prince George, BC – While the athletes, themselves, have another full season to go through before selections for the 2015 Canada Winter Games goes next fall, volunteers have it a whole lot easier…

Representatives and staff from the 2015 Winter Games Sports Committee are hosting a Sports Volunteer Recruitment Fair today, to allow those who put their name forward during the bid process and those newly interested in choosing their specific role for the games.

"We know that many people want to volunteer for a specific sport, whether it is hockey or alpine skiing or figure skating – they’ve signed up online and are in our system," says Sport Operations Manager, Lisa Shaw-MacLaren.  "But they don’t yet have their assigned role."

She says, "This recruitment fair is their opportunity to choose that role."

The fair runs between 11am and 5pm in the centre court of Pine Centre Mall today.

It is just 480 days until Prince George hosts the two-week sporting and cultural event.  Many of the local sporting venues will be put through their paces this winter with a number of test events set to take place over the next six months.  Shaw-MacLaren says the push is on to fill the sporting volunteer positions so orientation can begin this fall and winter.

BCRacer. You sound like Scrooge. Bah, humbug. It is what it is. Get out there and volunteer and enjoy. Its going to be great.

It’s a done deal. This commitment to host the Canada Winter Games was made years ago. And we won.

We will do a wonderful job of hosting thousands of athletes and visitors to our city. As we always do when we are called to.

The improvements to our city and city facilities are a great reason to celebrate. Not all of the money for these games comes from the local tax payers pocket.

And, I thank God for all of the Volunteers in this community and every other community. Without them, nothing would happen.

I hope many businesses in our community benefit and prosper as a result of this event. We will all be richer for the experience, if we get involved and participate in some way.

Why not enjoy it if you are already paying for it anyways? Would I have voted for it? Heck no. But when life gives you those proverbial lemons you make the dang lemonade. Or you get grouchy about it and have no fun. I’ll take the lemonade.

BCRacer…

We wouldn’t have money for those “parties” or ANY of the legacy projects if it wasn’t for the 2015 Games. It’s helping build a better community. All the provincial and federal money that is going into the games helps our city.

More and more people are going to Councillor Stolz’s store as a result of the games. He has a games store, gaming is the in thing and people are dropping money there like crazy so that he can keep on paying his taxes to the City. ;-)
