Prince George, BC – Judo, archery, biathlon, snowboarding, figure skating…just a few of the many sports needing volunteers as the countdown clock ticks away the days to the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
Yesterday, members of the Sport Organizing Committees were on-hand at a Volunteer Recruitment Fair at Pine Centre Mall to answer questions and encourage any and all to get involved. It’s the first time city residents have been encouraged to ‘pick their sport’.
"The day has gone really well," said Sport Coordinator, Emmy Blouin. "We weren’t sure what to expect given that it was such a nice day outside, but it didn’t seem to deter people from stopping by the booth and chatting with the various SOC members."
Blouin said the SOCs wanted to hold the recruitment fair during the ‘shoulder’ season before it snows, to provide some training before a number of test events are held this winter. But she admitted the test events will really be the ‘first shot’ for many volunteers.
"There will be people involved who already understand the sport and have some experience with it, but there’s going to be people who just want to be involved and this is their first opportunity to be around the sport." Blouin emphasized, "We don’t care – we want anyone who wants to come out to sign up."
If you missed the recruitment fair, or have registered to volunteer in past drives, but didn’t specify the sport you’d like to be involved with, you can email 2015sportvolunteers@gmail.com
