AQ Advisory Continues

Thursday, October 24, 2013 @ 4:23 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The Air Quality Advisory issued for Prince George remains in effect.
At 3 this afternoon, the 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 35 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and 23 µg/m3 at College Heights. The  provincial air quality objective for fine particles (PM2.5) is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours.
The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles (PM10) is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 67 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 35 µg/m3 at College Heights and 46 µg/m3 at BCR at 3 pm.
Based on the quality data, the high levels are mainly due to Industry sources and some contribution due to open burning.

Even though pollution levels are expected to remain high this evening conditions are forecast to gradually improve. Air quality is expected to be better at higher elevations.

This Air Quality Advisory is expected to be in effect at least until Friday morning, with an update to be provided tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.

How about instead of putting up advisories and giving everyone free bus rides the city starts giving fines to the contributors of the smog and the smell? It is easily avoidable all they have to do is turn on their re-burner system and poof no more stink. I know it costs the bizzilion dollar making mills a few bucks in natural gas but is it really worth the health of everyone in the community?

Well, too early in the season to blame woodstoves. As well, thanks to the heavy moist fog, road dust cant be used as a scapegoat either! This would make one of the first publically announced AQ days that is actually being blamed on pulp mills and the refinery.. Maybe we should allieve the guilt we have now put upon industry here by lighting our woodstoves and racing around in the dirt?

This advisory of course wouldn’t have anything to do with the government burn just south of PG.

Yes, I totally agree that fines should be given to the contributers of the smog and smell. After all, they now say it causes lung cancer…..was on the news two days ago!
