Prince George, B.C. – Pick an event that occurs every calendar year and the Prince George Railway and Forestry Museum will have something happening in conjunction with it.

Halloween is coming up this week and, because it will be all over with before next weekend, the folks at the museum hosted a Halloween Fairy Tale on Saturday. The event had plenty to capture the imagination of youngsters and admission was free if mom and dad brought along a non-perishable food donation for the Salvation Army Food Bank. Judging by the number of people out in the rail yard, and the boxes of donated food items, the day was a roaring success.

And there was lots to do. With the theme being a “Hallowee Fairy Tale”, pieces of equipment on site were decked out in costumes from Grimms’ Fairy Tales, including Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty and the Frog Prince. Of course one of the main attractions at the railway museum is, what else, mini-train rides on the Cottonwood Ghost Train. People big and small were lined up for that.

There was a witch serving up hot chocolate, hot dogs and smores. A bonfire was nearby to take the chill off a cool autumn day. A very popular idea was the pumpkin patch, where families could pick out a pumpkin and take it home for Halloween on Thursday. Businesses including Save-on Parkwood, Superstore and Shoppers Wholesale donated the pumpkins.

Being Halloween you have to have something scary, and that was provided in a coach and sleeper car way at the back of the yard. A couple of tykes weren’t too keen on going “in there”. But those who did saw plenty to chatter about. Skeletons and headless bodies, huge spiders, witches, vampires, Frankenstein, all the things that make Halloween fun.

After taking in all there was to see outside, youngsters had the opportunity to warm up inside the museum and try their hand at various crafts. And every child who visited Saturday was given a goodie bag to take home in a warm-up for Halloween.
