New Generation Police Car Arrives in PG

Tuesday, October 29, 2013 @ 11:47 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Meet Prince George RCMP cruiser number 1107, the new breed of cruiser for the local detachment.

It is the first of 21 Ford Taurus Interceptor cruisers that will, eventually,  replace the Crown Victoria cruisers in the local detachment’s fleet.

The new models will offer all wheel drive, “That will be a real plus in this area especially during winter” says RCMP Corporal Craig Douglass. He says the 3.5 litre V6 engine will kick up 280 hp, and that will provide good speed and improved fuel mileage.

The switch to the new model is a result of the Ford Motor Company discontinuing the Crown Victoria model, a vehicle that has been the workhorse for the RCMP for more than a decade.

Robocop drove a Ford Taurus.

I am curious why the license plate number is obscured. It is readily identifiable as an RCMP vehicle, isn’t it? In addition to that they each have unique vehicle numbers on them, do they not?

Good to see an AWD car option up here.

Now I just have to memorize this shape ;)

I’m surprised that the existing vehicles don’t have 4WD.

With society gaining weight as it is, getting a small car??? Ohhh forgot… criminals are all short and skinny :)

Pretty sweet looking ride.. From this vantage point that is!!

@BCRacer. I’ll go the speed limit like everyone else. ;)

Harb: “Robocop drove a Ford Taurus.”

I remember how futuristic those cars looked back in that movie. lol.

Me thinks they’re holding back some info on the true power of these interceptors. 280hp V6 isn’t going to catch all the new pony cars (Challenger, Mustang and Camaro) that start at 305hp and go as high as 600! But assuming that’s no fib, definitely still good enough to pull over the average Joe in his grocery-getter or PG SUV. And I suppose that’s what helicopters and spike belts are for…

Those will look great sitting in a Tim Horton’s parking lot. ;)

No matter what the power output is of this car (and who cares), you can’t out run a radio signal and a spike strip.

Gus, a friend told me that she took a picture of a car and the license plate did not show up in the picture so she tried again. She said the numbers would not show up so maybe it is something ICBC has done so you can’t take a picture of one. I don’t know. I was going to try but forgot about it until now.

something doesnt quite add up… The little 2.0 is 240hp but I understood the all wheel drive option had to come with the 3.5, which makes sense. If it is the 3.5 as stated then its more like 365hp.
Cool car though, these things are bad azz :)

There are two different versions of the 3.5 V6 used in the Taurus platform.

The regular engine is 288HP and the twin turbo “EcoBoost” version is 365HP. The torque differences between the two are even larger at 254 ft. lbs. and 350 ft. lbs. respectfully.

I’ve seen some police cars out here in Ottawa with the EcoBoost badges and others that didn’t, so I assume both versions of the 3.5 is in use in the police platforms.

As an aside, the 3.5 EcoBoost in the Taurus is FAST . . .

duffer…. Years ago a member told us that ICBC does not insure these vehicles even though has plates. So when gets into accident, they just get a new vehicle. I thought it was interesting./. Weird but interesting.. The Force mus have some sort of insurance…

Huh. Interesting NMG thx. I knew there was a 3.7 but didn’t know there was a non-turbo 3.5. The 2.0 is an Ecoboost too so that might even be some of the badges you see.

All vehicles must be registered, here in BC we have ICBC who registers vehicles where in places like Alberta they have government offices and insurance is bought separately.

You can’t have insurance without registration or registration without insurance in BC because ICBC puts the two together, but most other provinces you have to watch both dates as they expire separate from each other.

Funny interceptor, I didn’t realize the 2.0 was available in the Taurus platform. Here is a pretty cool website that talks about the new Ford interceptors:

I’m not sure about RCMP vehicles or how it works in BC, but the Government of Canada typically self insures their own vehicles and they don’t buy insurance through brokers.

Nice cars. Who pays for them.?? City, Province, or Feds??

I know the City pays for the Police Station, their parking, and their salaries, but don’t know who is responsible for the vehicles.

Jazzy looking. Enough room in the back for the fat drunks?

Slinky ever notice the Canada plates on military vehicles.

There is no insurance policies on the police cars. There is not even basic insurance on the RCMP police cars. In BC, all the RCMP pays for are the plates with the decal for registration purposes.

Financial responsibility is guaranteed by the Canadian Government. It would cost too much to insure each RCMP vehicle with even basic insurance.

Some members purchase private operator’s insurance to cover them while operating police cars, in the event they are responsible for an accident – even though the Government pays out.

The license plate is clearly visible here:

So the idea that you can’t get a photo of one, seems to be a myth.
