Artisans’ Fancy In Full Bloom At Studio Fair
A ‘garden’ of metal artwork by Calgary’s Creative Ironwork and Design draws attention at Studio Fair
Prince George, BC – It is another unique ‘first’ for Studio Fair, as the Community Arts Council’s Artist in Residence, Corey Hardeman, continues to add depth to this year’s door prize…
One of the attendees to this year’s 37th annual artisans’ fair will be the winner of Hardeman’s painting later today.
It is the first time Studio Fair has featured live painting.
"Fish are so reflective and colourful and, as a door prize, I thought it was a festive thing to do," says Hardeman. "So they’re rainbow trout – which my son was catching hand-over-fist all summer, so I had some opportunities to draw them then and paint them a little bit – so I had a bit of a mental image of them."
Originally from Halifax, Hardeman has been dividing her time between Prince George and Wells over the past eight years. She says there’s a fabulous community of artists here – many of whom are displaying their work this weekend, alongside artisans from across the country.
In total, there are 75 different booths at the Civic Centre this weekend, offering everything from handmade soaps and chocolates, bbq sauces and spice blends, to jewellery and unique clothing.
Martin Meroniuk is one of approximately 10 members of the Prince George Woodturners Guild displaying, and selling, what are finely crafted works of art.
Meroniuk’s ‘hobby’ began eight years ago after he retired from a career as a railroader and has progressed from cabinet-making to woodturning.
The bowl he’s holding at left has a natural edge, which is the original bark. The Prince George resident says it’s tricky to maintain that edge through the lengthy woodturning process.
From start to finish can be up to a year on a single bowl, depending on the type of wood and how green the wood was to begin with, says Meroniuk.
You still have time to take in the artistry of the woodturners and others, as Studio Fair gets set for its last day, from 10am until 4pm today.
