Taseko Challenges Review Panel’s Findings

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 @ 9:28 AM
Prince George, B.C- Taseko Mines has served notice it will challenge certain aspects of the Review Panel’s report on it’s proposed New Prosperity mine. The report concluded  there would be significant adverse environmental  impact on Fish Lake.  Taseko says Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) used the wrong design in its analysis of seepage rates from the tailings storage facility proposed for the mine.

The company says “The NRCan design, which was the basis of their analysis, is completely different than the Taseko design” , says Taseko’s President and CEO Russell Hallbauer.

The company says its proposed design was developed by Knight Piesold, but that NRCan and the Panel   chose to “ignore the Taseko design for the tailings basin that has been developed and reviewed by very experienced reputable tailings dam engineering and construction experts registered in the Province of BC. We believe that this new information is material to the interests of the Company and its shareholders" states Hallbauer.

Taseko has advised the Federal Minister of the Environment, Leona Aglukkaq that it intends to challenge certain aspects of the Review Panel’s findings and has asked the Minister to receive and consider additional information before making any final decision on whether or not the project should be allowed to proceed.

New Prosperity is a proposed open pit copper-gold  mine  located about 125 kms southwest of Williams Lake.

Something is fishy here. How can a review panel just “choose” to ignore a design if it was part of the proposal? Isn’t that what the proposal and review are all about? Or did Taseko present the taseko design after the panel came to their conclusion, hoping the first design would be accepted.
