Cougars Win a Thrilling 8-7 OT Game in Kamloops.

They may win some, they may lose some, but through 23 games one thing is certain: The 2013-2014 Prince George Cougars are anything but boring.

Sunday night in Kamloops, the Prince George Cougars defeated the Kamloops Blazers in overtime by a score of 8-7. Todd Fiddler had three goals and five points for the Cougars while Zach Pochiro, Jordan Tkatch, Troy Bourke, Alex Forsberg and Joe Carvalho all recorded multi-point games. The game featured a combined 98 shots and six lead changes through the 60 minutes and 17 seconds.

After one period the score was 4-3 for Prince George. After surrendering a goal just 1:50 in (Cole Ully for Kamloops) the Cougars responded at 8:29 when Chase Witala knocked home a rebound for his team leading 12th of the season. Prince George’s Alex Forsberg and Kamloops’ Tyson Ness traded goals at around the mid-way point of the period before Todd Fiddler and Zach Pochiro scored 1:28 apart to give the Cougars a brief two-goal lead. The final goal of the first came just 17 seconds later when Blazers forward Aaron Macklin banged home a rebound from the goalmouth area.

Kamloops outshot the Cougars 24-14 in the first period, and if the first 20 minutes were any indication, I think everybody in the building knew we were in for a crazy night.

Kamloops made a goaltending change after the first, electing to start Taran Kozun in the second in place of starter Bolton Pouliot. Kozun was tested early with some tough chances, but stood his ground.

Jordan Tkatch restored the Cougars two-goal lead just past the five minute mark of the second. Chase Souto quickly countered with a shorthanded breakaway goal for Kamloops and the game was back within one.

Then, on a four-on-three power play chance, the Blazers tied the game when Chase Souto knocked home his own rebound.

Aspen Sterzer then scored on a breakaway to give Kamloops the lead back in the late stages of the second.

Despite outshooting Kamloops 19-13 in the middle frame, the Cougars went to the dressing room down 6-5.

This time it was the Cougars who decided a change in goal was needed. Brett Zarowny led the team onto the ice to start the third, and was tested early with two straight Kamloops power play chances. The Blazers were unable to capitalize on their chances, and the Cougars responded well.

Todd Fiddler tied the game at six with an excellent display of skill off the rush. Fiddler took a Klarc Wilson pass, skated wide to the right and toe-dragged the puck through the Kamloops defender and stuffed it home for his second of the night. Tied game.

Mid-way through the third a scary incident took place when Aaron Macklin and Brett Roulston collided knee-on-knee at center ice. Roulston appeared to be badly injured on the play, and linemate Alex Forsberg came to his aid with a spirited fight with Macklin. Not only did the fight complete Forsberg’s ‘Gordie Howe Hat Trick’ but it also sparked the Cougars bench

Surprisingly no penalty was called to Macklin on the play, but Kamloops would be penalized moments later when Connor Clouston got dinged for slashing.

The struggling Cougars power play came up big when Todd Fiddler slid a pass across the ice to Joseph Carvalho who buried his first ever WHL goal to give his team the lead.

Game over right? Not by a long shot.

Two minutes and 15 seconds later, Aspen Sterzer tied the game at seven with a blast from the left wing that snuck past Brett Zarowny, and with the seconds winding down in the third period the Cougars and Blazers were once again tied.

With less than a minute remaining in the third, Kamloops took another defensive zone penalty when Joe Kornelson tripped up Chase Witala in his defensive zone.

Troy Bourke was robbed on a point-blank opportunity in the final seconds, but the Cougars had secured at least a point, and had 1:10 of power play time to start overtime.

Right off a faceoff the Cougars advanced the puck into the Blazers zone with speed. Zach Pochiro skated the puck across the line, slid a pass to the left wing for Troy Bourke who weaved wide, cut towards the goal and tried to sneak home a backhand past Kozun. Todd Fiddler skated hard to the goal mouth and knocked home a loose puck off the Bourke chance to end the game 17 seconds into the overtime period.

Fiddler’s hat trick goal gave him his fifth point of the night, and more importantly gave the Cougars a valuable second point which helps them leapfrog the Vancouver Giants into third place in the B.C. Division and back into eighth place in the Western Conference standings.

Prince George outshot the Blazers 54-44, and finished the game three-for-six on the power play and killed off four of the Blazers’ five power play chances.

The Cougars record is now at 8-11-1-3, and now they return home for one game against Medicine Hat on Tuesday before heading back on the road for five straight games.

What were you doing Alex Forsberg, trying to beat them into submission…if you have to fight it tells me you don’t know how to play. I am sure that will be talked about for days….

He was defending a team mate! Finally some charactor ,good to see.

Fiddler has had a positive impact already but has a history of being traded— hopefully not a history like Charles Inglis.
