Medical Marihuana Up for Discussion at RDFFG
Prince George, B.C. – The Regional District of Fraser Fort George will be looking at possible changes to its Zoning bylaw No.833 in order to have some input on where medical marijuana can be grown.
The Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulation is now in effect, and the existing Medical Marihuana Access Regulation, which allowed the growing of marijuana in homes for personal medical use, will be phased out in the spring of 2014.
Under the new rules, new marihuana manufacturing facilities can be permitted outright if located in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
In a report to the Board, which meets today, staff say the current ALR regulations and agricultural use provisions in Zoning Bylaw No. 833 allow agricultural use in most areas of the Regional District with minimal control by the Regional District and without public input. “Because of the industrial nature, as well as likely security issues that are to be associated with the new production facilities, there is a potential for conflicts with other land uses” says the staff report to the Board.
Staff are calling on the Board to approve the development of a land use bylaw that would regulate the location of possible grow operations.

Putting these grow ops in remote agricultural lands is a recipe for violent crimes. Huge grow ops, remote, and yet for most people only accessible through street level illegal dealers…. Grow op rip offs will be rampant.
IMO the best place for a grow op would be in the old RCMP building in downtown PG. With proper filters no one would even know its there. The building is secure, eyes on the area all the time, and only blocks from the local RCMP detachment if any gangs did try to make it through the front door, much less clean the place out. Could probably employ 100 people with well paying jobs and create a special tax rate for this type of business sharing the return to the city.
Not much different than the brew pub down the street if it was done right.
Legal grow-ops are a joke. I saw an obvious grow op right in downtown Parksville: run-down old house with unkept yard, all the windows boarded up, but crude ventilation pipes sticking out and you could smell the mj for blocks. Reported it to the RCMP and they said it was a legal operation and they couldn’t touch it. I tried to find/contact the agency responsible for monitoring legal grw ops and couldnt find anyone who would accept the accountability.
Similarly, I’m aware. BC Hydro has investigated a number of large grow ops that are apparently legal but go way beyond the scope of someone growing a few plants for medicinal reasons.
“go way beyond the scope of someone growing a few plants for medicinal reasons.”
One has to remember that one has to test the product before putting it on the market ….. ;-)
Worth while reading what might be about to happen when the new laws go into effect.
I suppose it will be a prescribed drug which may be able to be covered under any kind of medication insurance, whether provincial or private.
